Eddy Reynoso, head trainer of Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (51-1-2, 34 KOs), is confident his boxer made the right choice is going after the WBO light heavyweight championship.
He challenges for the belt on Saturday night, when he faces Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo, who holds the WBA middleweight title at 160-pounds, is moving up by two full weight classes to face Kovalev at 175-pounds.
Canelo has never fought beyond the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds. He made his debut at that weight in December 2018, when he blew away Rocky Fielding in three rounds to capture the WBA "regular" title.
After that bout, he moved back to the middleweight division in May and won a twelve round decision over Daniel Jacobs to unify the WBC, WBA, IBF titles.
Kovalev is close to the end of his career, but he's still the much bigger and the much stronger fighter between the two.
Reynoso is very pleased with their preparation for the fight.
"We're focused. We've been training for more than three months and have prepared very well. We haven't had any setbacks with injuries or illnesses and we're good. We've taken care of ourselves and we prepared well to be able to win this fight. Kovalev is a strong fighter and he has lots of good qualities. He's made it this far in his career because of that. He has a good punch and has a lot of heart," Reynoso said.
"We've seen some errors in his fighting style and we hope to capitalize on those mistakes the day of the fight. It's very important for us and for Mexican boxing that new figures arise, or new records are being broken. Whether that's Saul or someone else, I think it's important for everyone that's in the world of boxing."
