Two years ago, WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) was offered the opportunity to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs). He wanted the fight, but his handlers felt he needed more experience. Now the fight is set for September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo now feels ready after beating seasoned opponents like Shane Mosley, Austin Trout and others.
"We have prepared and we are ready. When I was 19 I was offered the fight and obviously I was excited because I wanted the fight and my team at the time said '"no, you are not going to fight.' Because they knew I was not ready and at that time Mayweather did not place so many obstacles in front of us. And now we are confident that we can win and we know we can win," Canelo said.
The fight is set for a catch-weight of 152-pounds, which Canelo is not a problem.
"I work hard to make weight without a lot of sacrifice. I'm very comfortable in making weight. For this [catch-weight] I will work a little harder but everything will be okay. In the days leading up to a fight, I'm checking my weight and working hard, which is important," Canelo said.
