BoxingScene.com reported earlier that Golden Boy Promotions is negotiation a July 12th pay-per-view fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs) and WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs).

Lara is already booked to defend his title against Ishe Smith on May 2nd at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. To finalize a deal to face Canelo, Lara would have to withdraw from the Smith defense.

But according to members of Canelo's team, the fight with Lara would not involve the WBA title - at least for Canelo's side. The Mexican star is not interested in paying the sanctioning fee, pointing at the fact that Floyd Mayweather Jr. still holds the recognized WBA title at 154-pounds. Mayweather decisioned Canelo last September. Lara is capable of still making an official defense by paying the sanctioning fee. The belt would become vacant if he lost. The fight is being negotiated for the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds.
