During last week's WBO convention in Puerto Rico - Francisco 'Paco' Valcarcel, the president of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), made a very bold prediction - stating that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) would knock Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) out in a rematch.
Mayweather won a twelve round decision, handing Canelo his only career defeat back in September of 2013 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather had a few issues in winning a one-sided twelve round decision.
Canelo has always claimed that his body was weak from squeezing down to 152-pounds - a catch-weight demand required by Mayweather in order to finalize their deal. Canelo fought at 155 for his next five contest, before dropping down to junior middleweight last month.
Last month, Canelo captured the WBO's junior middleweight title with a knockout of Liam Smith at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Mayweather retired from boxing after beating Andre Berto last September. At the moment there is no indication that he plans to return.
If Mayweather decides to return and faces Canelo for a second time, Valcarcel expects the Mexican star to give Mayweather his first defeat.
"I have no doubt that right now Canelo knock out Floyd Mayweather in a rematch. The Canelo who fought with the English fighter Liam Smith, would have knocked Mayweather out at 154 pounds - I have no doubt about that," Valcarcel said to BoxingScene.com/Notifight.com.
"Every day that passes, Canelo becomes a better fighter. He has better use of his jab, throws combinations better, has a better chin, he is handsome, intelligent in the ring and most important he has the heart of Mexico. He is the fighter that everyone wants to [face]."
"Canelo is a fighter that boxing needs. Canelo is the only world champion at this time, outside of Manny Pacquiao, who can draw fans to the venues. I do not understand why [the critics] attack Canelo, because he's been very good for boxing. "
Canelo was informed of Valcarcel's prediction and appreciates the kind words. He would like nothing more than to prove that prediction right by avenging his only career loss.
"I'm very grateful for the words that [Valcarcel] used to speak about me. At this moment I feel like a more complete fighter. During that moment [against Mayweather], I was only 23 years old and had less experience. Today I am a more complete, more mature fighter in the ring. And I would like nothing more than to [face Mayweather] to see if [Valcarcel's prediction] is true or not," Canelo said.
