Yomar Alamo found his way back into the win column both in the ring and with home viewers.
The unbeaten junior welterweight prospect saw a significant spike in viewership for his most recent Telemundo appearance, topping the February 28 show which averaged 396,000 viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. Alamo came up aces in the main event, scoring a 10-round majority decision over previously undefeated Kendo Castañeda live from Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida.
The figure places the show as the third most-watched boxing telecast on any platform for the month of February. Despite its late-night start (11:35pm ET), the show outpaced all other U.S. televised events for the month save for two, both of which aired in primetime and came with far greater fanfare:
- The February 15 edition of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Fox, with Caleb Plant's 10th round stoppage of Vincent Feigenbutz drawing a main event average of 1.689 million viewers (peaking at 1.809 million, both figures serving as the highest rating for any fight of 2020 to date);
- The February 22 preliminary undercard to the jointly distributed ESPN and Fox Sports Pay-Per-View rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, with the non-PPV undercard averaging 1.42 million viewers across all platforms.
It also served as a significant spike in viewership both in relation to the Boxeo Telemundo telecast one weekend prior and from the same time slot one year ago. The February 28 show improved 28.2% on the 309,000 viewership average for the February 21 card, which served as the series’ 2020 season premiere.
The same weekend one year ago saw an average of 350,000 viewers tune in, providing this card with a 13.1% increase in viewership, after watching the trend head in the wrong direction as the February 22 series opener dipped nearly 11% from the 2019 premiere.
The viewership average is also a personal best for Alamo (18-0-1, 12KOs), whose last four bouts have all come in Telemundo-televised main events. The rising prospect from Caguas, Puerto Rico made his platform debut in the aforementioned 2019 spring season premiere, which averaged 347,000 viewers. A slight drop came in his summertime appearance, with an average of 341,000 viewers tuning in for his August 2 win over Salvador Briseno.
Two months later came the lone blemish on Alamo’s career, a 10-round draw with Mexico’s Antonio Moran atop an October 4 show which averaged just 301,000 viewers. His win over Castañeda (17-1, 8KOs) produced a 31.6 % improvement from that figure, as well as outpacing every other 2019 offering of Boxeo Telemundo save for the October 18 show from Niagara Falls, the series' debut in that location and which averaged 451,000 viewers.
