Andre Berto: record, next fight and profile →
Former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3, 22KOs) is sitting back and waiting for his manager, Rolando Arellano, to confirm a finalized deal for a rematch with Andre Berto (28-1, 22KOs), which may take place on January 28th on HBO.
Welterweight contender Andre Berto has vacated his IBF title in favor of a lucrative rematch with Victor Ortiz, which may take place in late January on HBO. Ortiz handed Berto his first career defeat, by unanimous decision, in a Fight of The Year contender in April. Randall Bailey was Berto's mandatory, and the IBF was pressing for the fight, but none of the major networks were interested in picking it up.
NEW YORK -- Welterweight contender Mike Jones fought two of his past three fights against tough Mexican Jesus Soto-Karass. Soto-Karass gave Jones all he could handle in their first bout, but Jones took care of him with ease in the rematch earlier this year on HBO.
Kell Brook moved to the front of the queue for a shot at the WBA welterweight title with an impressive stoppage victory over Rafal Jackiewicz. The Sheffield fighter extended his perfect record to 25-0 as he forced the referee to step in and call a halt to proceedings towards the end of the sixth round at the Ponds Forge Arena.
Sheffield welterweight Kell Brook has pledged to bring his very own "X-factor" to primetime viewers on Saturday night.
Lou DiBella wants to be clear on this topic. He’s not accusing Victor Ortiz of doping. He’s not making that accusation. He doesn’t think Ortiz is guilty of using performance enhancing drugs. But he will not allow Andre Berto, a fighter he promotes, to face Ortiz again in a rematch unless both fighters conform to some pre-fight requirements.
Promoter Lou DiBella advised BoxingScene.com that currently there is no interest in having Andre Berto (27-1, 21KOs) defend the IBF welterweight title against Devon Alexander. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who recently signed Alexander to his company, was attempting to match him against Berto in the fall or early 2012.
Andre Berto has a healthy respect for Victor Ortiz now that they’ve engaged in one of the most fascinating fights of 2011.
Andre Berto, fresh off another exciting performance on HBO, will certainly be right back on the network, and there quite a few possibilities for him. Back in April, Berto lost his WBC title, and suffered his first career loss, in a twelve round war with Victor Ortiz. However, he returned last Saturday night in Biloxi to capture the IBF's welterweight crown with a five round stoppage of Jan Zaveck.
The promoter Bob Arum continued his verbal assault on the undefeated featherweight Garry Russell Jr., saying on Tuesday that Russell should never have been allowed to fight an eight-round bout against a lackluster opponent, like he did on Saturday, on HBO because it “hurts the brand.” Arum also took aim at Andre Berto, who won the IBF welterweight title against Jan Zaveck on Saturday, condemning the way he’s been developed by his handlers. As a result, Berto will “never amount to anything special,” according to Arum. Berto and Russell both fought on Saturday on HBO.
