HBO Exec: Rios-Provodnikov is a Priority For The Fans

New York - Although HBO will be dormant in the months of August and September, Director of Programing, Peter Nelson, hopes to have a busy fall and winter. “It’s been a very busy year so far,” Nelson told BoxingScene.com. “We took a little break in the summer months to ramp up for the fall where we go to Oct 3rd for Matthysse Postol combined with Soto-Orozco. We have Golovkin-Lemieux with Roman Gonzalez followed by Wladimir Klitschko Tyson and other things brewing that night. Then we head into a busy November with Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez and December schedule to end the year.”

Over the past few weeks Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has been trying to put together a December HBO showdown between WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley and former lightweight champion Brandon Rios. Despite what is being spread on the internet, a bout between Ruslan Provodnikov and Adrien Broner is not on the horizon. Artie Pelullo, the head of Banner Promotions, who represents Provodnikov told BoxingScene.com on Friday afternoon: "There's absolutely no truth to a fight between Ruslan and Broner. I don't know where it came from. I even saw that there was a poster made by a fan but there has been no conversation from anybody from Al Haymon's people or Showtime for an Adrien Broner fight with Ruslan."

There has been some talk from the side of Brandon Rios about facing either Ruslan Provodnikov or Jessie Vargas in the fall. According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, HBO has given them a date for his next bout. Rios is coming off a third round thrashing of Mike Alvarado in January. For the last year or two, Artie Pelullo of Banner Promotions has been yearning for a match-up between his client( Provodnikov) and Rios, which figures to be a fan-friendly slugfest should it ever come to fruition.

Prior to his fight against Jessie Vargas last month, Tim Bradley said that he had bad memories of his previous fight at the StubHub Center. That fight was a March, 2013 victory over Ruslan Provodnikov in which Bradley suffered a horrible beating and had to climb off the canvas and also take a knee in the fight's closing seconds to secure the victory.

In 2009 Mauricio Herrera defeated Ruslan Provodnikov in Las Vegas in a bout that aired on ESPN Friday Night Fights. Herrera's victory over Provodnikov was a narrow points win and after his technical decision victory over Hank Lundy this past Saturday, Herrera said he wouldn't mind facing the Russian again. When Provodnikov heard of this news, he said he has no problem facing Herrera but would prefer rematches against Lucas Matthysse or Tim Bradley first. The fighter known as Siberian Rocky hurt Bradley several times in their 2013 Fight of the Year. Provodnikov dropped Bradley in the first round and the American was on shaky legs when he rose to his feet. His knees buckled and there were other questionable slips in the round that could have been ruled knockdowns.

After his technical decision victory Saturday over Hank Lundy, Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7KOs) stated that he wanted a big fight next. In an article by BoxingScene.com's Francisco Salazar, his targets are Lucas Matthysse and a rematch with Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17KOs) whom he defeated via unanimous decision in 2011. When told of Herrera's comments, Provodnikov said that he wants a rematch with Matthysse, who he lost a close decision to in a 2015 "Fight of the Year" candidate. The April 18th fight was an all out brawl in which both fighters received heavy damage.

(LOS ANGELES, Calif.) - If Mauricio Herrera could look at a fight where the cup was half-full and half-empty at the same time, it would be his technical decision win over Hank Lundy on Saturday night. Herrera improved to 22-5-1, 7 KOs with the win before over a partisan crowd of 4,672 at the Sports Arena. Lundy dropped to 25-5-1, 12 KOs.
