After his technical decision victory Saturday over Hank Lundy, Mauricio Herrera (22-5, 7KOs) stated that he wanted a big fight next. In an article by BoxingScene.com's Francisco Salazar, his targets are Lucas Matthysse and a rematch with Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17KOs) whom he defeated via unanimous decision in 2011.
When told of Herrera's comments, Provodnikov said that he wants a rematch with Matthysse, who he lost a close decision to in a 2015 "Fight of the Year" candidate. The April 18th fight was an all out brawl in which both fighters received heavy damage.
Provodnikov said that he wasn't impressed with Herrera's performance but that if the fight made sense, he would face him after fighting Matthysse again.
"Right now I'm focused on getting a rematch with Matthysse! It's a fight that I know I lost and there is no question about the decision. I know that next time our fight will be even better than the first one and I know that people would watch the fight.
"I was at the Herrera-Lundy fight live. I didn't see much from Herrera. Lundy won almost every round and to me he looked like the prospect and Herrerra looked like the opponent that night. I would fight Herrera any time after Matthysse if it made sense and if that's what everybody wants to see," Provodnikov told BoxingScene.com.
