Robinson Castellanos: record, next fight and profile →
The president of the World Boxing Council, Jose Sulaiman, has stated that Robinson Castellanos (18-9, 11KOs) is the official challenger to newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs), who won the belt on Saturday night with a ninth round TKO of Daniel Ponce De Leon. Robinson earned the shot by flying over to Panama and defeating Celestin Caballero in a final eliminator.
Robinson Castellanos, the World Boxing Council's silver champion at 126-pounds, is heading to Las Vegas to watch full champion Daniel Ponce De Leon defend the title against Abner Mares on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He will be accompanied by his promoter Dr. Fausto Daniel Garcia of Boxeo de Gala. Castellanos recently traveled to Panama and won a final eliminator against Celestino Caballero, who handed Ponce De Leon his first career loss. The record of Castellanos, 18-9 with 11KOs, is very deceiving. He is much better than his record suggests and the last time has clearly beaten was a fifth round TKO at the hands of an 11-0 Mikey Garcia in 2008. Since that defeat, Castellanos has gone 14-2 and those two defeats were controversial split decisions.
Former world champion Celestino 'Pelenchín' Caballero said his split decision loss against Mexican featherweight champion Robinson Castellanos, was mostly due to his inactivity of 16 months. Caballero had no issues with Saturday's outcome and plans to continue his career.
Zapir Rasulov (26-0, 23KO) was forced to take on a rare long night's work, settling for a 10-round decision win over Devis Perez (18-9-4, 8KO) in their super welterweight bout. Scores were 97-93 and 99-91 (twice) in favor Rasulov, who scored 13 straight knockouts heading into the fight. Former title challenger Rafael Concepcion (17-6-1, 8KO) scored three official knockdowns en route to a unanimous decision win over Alejandro Corrales (9-14-2, 5KO). Scores were 57-54 (twice) and 59-52.

On his arrival in the airport, Castellanos met with his rival Caballero where they warmly shook hands and posed for press photos. On his exit from the airport, Mexican Castellanos received all kinds of comments from the fans, and talking with the press he explained: . “I’m calm and confident. I had a great preparation and I will win this fight either by KO or decision. I have a great winning strike and I will try to keep it. I want to fight for the world title and I’m sure that I can get it if I win this fight”.
