Very few. The southern portion of the pipeline (approved by Obama) was finished a while back; only the northern part was unfinished. Certainly some refinery jobs will be lost, but that's just part of the oil industry.

I have 40 years experience in the oil industry; trust me it's for the better for US oil production for this foreign oil to stay in the ground. First, it's uneconomic at current prices and it's only socialist Canadian subsidies that get that oil even close to economic, second, why didn't the Canadians move the oil on thei own land? It was because British Columbia prevented a pipeline to their coast to be offloaded on tankers. If the Canadians themselves AND the Canadian First Nation (Indians) didn't want a pipeline, why should we want it?

There is too much oil on the market anyway. Putting another 850,000 barrels would crater the price...which would be a very bad thing for US producers.

We're only losing a few hundred jobs that can easily be refilled..they aren't unique positions.

Oil and gas government policy is never just based on economics. Certainly it's better to transport oil by pipeline and not by trucks and rail. The way Sierra Club/Friends of the Earth lawyers work is to delay, delay, delay projects till someone give in.

Marketing of oil is a geopolitical issue. This pipeline was always going to be problematic because of the nature of the oil (extremely environmentally damaging, heavy, difficult to refine) and because it was going through or near Native American lands. So you have two issues that "environmentalists" can grab onto protest against.."we're hurting the planet (true to some extent" and "we're messing around with the Indians". It gave the lawyers something to grab onto in order to delay it and to get it in front of the public.

Again, I've been in the oil industry for 40 years; I'm no Sierra Club lawyer. Bottom line to me is that the 500,000-850,000 extra barrels of oil on the market would be too much of it at this time. And F@ck the Canadians anyway. And I don't shed any tears over Indians; sorry but that's my opinion. However, the industry sees this as the thin end of the wedge...they have to fight just like the tree huggers do.
