Trump plans $12 billion bailout for farmers hurt by tariffs

President Trump on Tuesday tweeted that “tariffs are the greatest!” and then offered a spirited defense of his escalating trade wars — the same day the administration said it would cough up $12 billion to farmers slammed by retaliatory tariffs.
“Tariffs are the greatest! Either a country which has treated the United States unfairly on Trade negotiates a fair deal, or it gets hit with Tariffs,”
Trump tweeted.
Later, speaking at the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kansas City, the president predicted that his tariffs on China, Canada, Mexico and the EU would eventually work.
And he ripped the “fake news” media for reporting on farmers’ and his own party’s lawmakers’ criticism of his policies— even as a growing number of Republican senators slammed his tariffs and the bailouts they necessitated.
“Last year our country lost $817 billion, with a ‘b,’ on trade. We lost $817 billion. These countries have been ripping us off for decades. It doesn’t take a week [to fix]. It takes a little longer. But we’re going to get it done,” Trump promised.
“Just stick with us. Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news.”
He then singled out the EU, charging that they came to him begging for a deal once he threatened to slap tariffs on Mercedes, BMWs and other imports.
“What the European Union is doing to us is incredible. How bad? They made $151 billion. European Union. They sound nice, but they’re rough,” he said.
“They’re all coming in to see me tomorrow. They’re all coming to the White House,” he said about European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s planned visit.
“I said, ‘You have to change.’ They didn’t want to change. I said, ‘Okay, good, we’re going to tariff your cars. Millions of cars. So many cars. I said, ‘We’re going to have to tariff your cars.‘ They said ‘When can we show up?”
He also criticized China, but added another slam at the media: “But it’s all working out. Just remember what you are seeing and what you are reading is not what is happening.”
Earlier Tuesday, multiple reports said Team Trump would enact an emergency bailout aimed at easing the financial and political pain caused by Trump’s tariff war in key electoral states.
The total bailout is reportedly about $12 billion, and the official announcement — which the network said would likely target dairy, pork and soy products — could come as soon as Tuesday afternoon, hours after the president’s tweet.
And few outside Trump’s inner circle of economic advisers seemed to agree with his rosy prognosis, with House Speaker Paul Ryan and several GOP senators voicing rare disapproval of the president’s tariffs and bailout.
“I’ve made it clear, I don’t think tariffs are the right answer. I don’t support tariffs. I think tariffs are taxes,” Ryan said.
“There are better tools that we can use to hold abusers of trade laws and people who — countries that perpetuate unfair trade practices, there are better tools to use to get them to play fairly. I just don’t think the tariff route is the smart way to go.”
“Tariffs are not great,” GOP Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania told CNBC. “They are taxes, paid by Americans, that harm consumers, workers, and companies.”
“American farmers want access to markets, not taxpayer-funded bailouts. Tariffs are taxes that punish American consumers and producers. If tariffs punish farmers, the answer is not welfare for farmers — the answer is remove the tariffs,” Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake added.
“This trade war is cutting the legs out from under farmers and White House’s ‘plan’ is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches. America’s farmers don’t want to be paid to lose – they want to win by feeding the world,” said Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul also piled on.
“Tariffs are taxes that punish American consumers and producers. If tariffs punish farmers, the answer is not welfare for farmers — the answer is remove the tariffs,” he said.
Earlier this month, 25 percent tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports of machinery and electronics went into effect, prompting Beijing to respond with tit-for-tat tariffs on American exports of soybeans and other products.
Retaliatory tariffs on goods such soybeans, pork, beef and bourbon have hit farmers’ and others’ bottom lines in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa and Kentucky.
He spoke a day after the Senate confirmed Pentagon official Robert Wilkie as the new secretary of Veterans Affairs on Monday night.
Trump was also raising money for Missouri Senate candidate Josh Hawley, who is challenging Sen. Claire McCaskill — whom Trump slammed by name — in a race that’s key to Republican efforts to maintain their Senate majority.
Trump also praised the vets and his efforts to improve their health care, touted the recovering economy, slammed Democrats and illegal immigrants and his decision to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

As far as Nato goes, no they dont owe us money. That said they should. If anything they need to step up their game and pay more.
Another case of being selective, theres no way he could really think opioid deaths would be down. BUT the white house did say,
"The White House cited an article about the decline in the number of opioid prescriptions."
So scripts are down because of the new laws. No thats not going to affect the stuff coming in from overseas in the US mail.
The facts on MS13 and ICE. I think taking any of these people off US soil isnt a bad thing.
