  • Ughh Arm Punching!!

Ok so I was getting a bit frustrated yesterday. While doing mitt work my trainer keeps telling me that I'm arm punch and not getting good hip rotation, particuarly on my left hook. It's like I try and focus on getting that good rotation and snap but it's still not coming naturally to me.

Is there any little tips or particular exercise that i can use to make rotating my hips become more muscle memory? I've only been boxing for about 6 weeks so I'm hoping its something that will just develope on its own but i want it now! lol

get a broom stick, put it over your shoulders behind your neck with your arms hanging over. get into fighting position and rotate........ Rockin'

heres some ideas that might help your left hook.

try throwing left hooks really close to a bag then slowly back away, you naturally will use better hip rotation up close.

throwing 3-5 left hooks in a row as fast as you can. helps train the effecientcy of movement

chances are you'l feel more natural throwing a short right hook from southpaw, so go back and forth in stances trying to mimic your weeker hook to your natural hook.

Hmm right try tossing remaining hook varieties really near to a bag then gradually back away, you normally will use better hip spinning up near.

everyone punches different. there are arm punchers and it works for them. some just wing punches etc. it is not all hips. yes we are tought that but how about asking your trainer how to turn your punches over. he should know how to instruct you right away. not sayin it will be better but just ask him.

              This is what you do.

Stand in your boxing stance. Drop your hands to your sides, relax, and turn your shoulder.

That same motion is how you want to throw the hook.

Remember that motion. You then pivot your front foot at the same time. Power is created.

The secret or key to it, is to step in. It's what everyone forgets.

Combine all that and magic happens. By default you will no longer "arm punch" just because of the mechanics involved and they way you've added your body to the punch (ie: stepping in)

I had a shyt left hook. Now it's the most bad ass punch I have after a guy at the gym told me about the shoulder trick.

What do you mean by step in?

Do you mean when you punch as you are moving fowards or something else?

Nah. Just take a step forward with your front foot, then turn and throw the hook.

It'll feel like your leaning forward but when you pivot and throw the hook, you'll feel your body behind the punch.
