  • Guys explain why do most fighters now seemly hit the heavy-ba extremely light

I believe it all started off with Floyd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXbl9OKjGSk

since seeing couple good fighters in a gym I train hitting the bag very lightly. I was wondering wtf, as i was hitting the bag with decent rotational force.

Then soon enough a lot of other high caliber fighters started doing this same routine.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YTagW9tBPY

Like I know why Floyd does it to simulate being into a tough 8th or 12th round fight tired and just pushing through it by punching back. After a grueling work session he hits the bag. But the other fighters don't look (as I just posted) even remotely dead tired at all so it wouldn't make sense to me copying floyd.

Even the guys in the background are doing this.

It's like some sort of an unnoticed tread everyone who is trying to make a living boxing is picking up on kinda influential what Floyd did.

Edit: don't most fighters train like this, though.

I suspect the power is usually reduced for increased speed combinations and alternating punch powering as for your inquiry I don't know.

      Good question!

I personally do not know why NOW they hit like this.

From the videos of Sugar Ray, Duran, of course Tyson and modern Sergio Martinez, these guys were quite committed to really snapping their punches at the bag.

So I am curious why at least Floyd does not do it. Berto and Peterson are not such "experts" to me to make judgements

Perhaps the pitty pat punches are used to to concentrate on form first before the heavier shots and sometimes used just to score some points with work rate using very little energy in a match.

I am not sure u r serious with this or not, but, it could be a legitimate reason! Peterson, Berto and even Floyd with battered fists are just feather fisted.

because a heavy bag is rough on the joints. Accuracy is much more important than hitting a big bag that doesn't hit back, doesn't move hardly at all. Double end bag and speed bag work will do much more for you than just ****ing away at a heavy bag. Technique is better to perfect than trying to punch as hard as possible.

If your punches are accurate, they will be damaging... speed kills.

I would agree with you, if it were you and me punching the bag like this, but these guys are pros and they hit a bag like girls slapping

They already know how much power they have though. It's pretty much a known thing that a guy is either a puncher or he's not. IMO it's all technique and accuracy. You don't have to hit a guy hard at all to put him down... a temple shot or an accurate shot the the jaw will put him down. I would be much more concerned with speed BUT, I don't compete either. I work on things to compliment some of the martial arts I do. A lot of shadow boxing, making sure the form is proper and i've been working on hitting a tennis ball I hung from my ceiling with my bare hands for accuracy... not as easy as it sounds actually.

Floyd may do it because of his hands. Ingeneral, if that's what your workouts on the bag look like than you are missing the whole point of the heavy bag. Then again, when the cameras are off of Floyd he may turn it up and dig into that bag. Alot of fighters don't show what they are working on when the cameras are there, they just go through the motions. I would not recommend following Floyd on this one if that is what his heavybag workous consist of............... Rockin'
