  • Broke my left hand

I got into a car accident and broke my 3rd metacarpal on my left hand. This was 2 days ago. I'm gonna fight at the armed forces boxing tournament in January, do you think my hand will be healed by then? If not, how long is it gonna take to fully heal?

Probably 4-6 weeks to heal, maybe longer if you have had it pinned or had surgery on it.

I broke the bone that's known as a boxer's fracture, apparently it was a bad angle (diagonally into the bone rather than across) and they predicted it would take 8 weeks to heal. It was back to 95% sooner than expected but 100% seemed to take a while, after 10 weeks they did a final x-ray and told me I still needed to wait another 4 weeks before doing boxing training.

I hope you recover in time but if you don't, be careful not to take any risks with it.

6-12 weeks depending on how bad the break is then it'll take time to get your strength back in your hand (It'll be weak as hell for days after especially if its in a cast or splint which it should be), then you'll want to start off light with shadow boxing etc before you even think of hitting pads, bags etc

You're probably looking at 16 weeks to be on the safe side before you should think about competing. Doesn't mean you can't still train though.

You really don't want to mess around with breaks or fractures, you'll only risk doing more damage.

thanks for the info, its in a cast right now but the doctor hasnt told me for how long. The tournament is in 2 months so if you say it takes 16 weeks i dont think its gonna heal in time for the fights. I dont wanna mess it up even more cause i plan on turning pro early 2013. damn this sucks
