  • Hard work vs Talent

Today, my friend who is a professional/teacher in Tae Kwan Do told me that martial arts is not all about talent; it's about hard work. Do you guys agree with this? Because I would love to agree with this but there are walls that you can't destroy just with hard work, being a good fighter requires talent as well, I mean I don't think there are any national or world champions who got to the top just by hard work. I'm not saying that I want to become a champion or anything but just wanted to hear your opinions.

Takes talent & bags of hard work & dedication.

You have to have something, you can't turn a complete muppet into a world class fighter.

No matter how much natural talent you have you have always got to eat right & train your ass off. Countless hours of sheer determination and pushing yourself, learning, aiming to better yourself & a very important factor IMO at least is getting enough rest/sleep to enable yourself to recover after gruelling training sessions.

Eat, train, breath, sleep boxing 24/7. This sport requires your EVERYTHING!

I feel and this is just my opinion that no one is born with a talent.Leo Messi for me was born with a desire to be great and so he had an ambition and he trained the hardest he could every trying to perfect his skills. Its the same with Frank Lampard they say he is the first one at training every day and the last to leave.Same with every sport you wont get to the top without dedicating yourself to your chosen profession.Talent to me has very little to do with it.Its all about the hard work and dedication and off course a little bit of luck along the way

Hard work/dedication, right mentality, the ability to see what you need to improve/self criticism, a ability to learn and supreme confidence is what you need to succeed.
Physical Talent doesn't mean much if you can't apply it the right way and will often make the person lazy due to having things come easy.

The hard worker never slacks off, while the prodigy gets easily bored and restless.

Guys who make everything look easy are often people who put tousand of hours to hone their skills to perfection.
They often have a obsession for perfection.

Houdini made each and every escape he performed look easy to the degree that people thought he used black magic but he actually but thousand of hour to perfect each escape.

Look at Mayweather. He is know to be one of the hardest worker in boxing.
His uncle barely coach him, he coaches himself.
he can do that due to his tremendous work ethic and knowledge of the game.

Another thing you have to have is knowledge of the game.
For example you can never be a good or rapper if you haven't studied the lyrics of great rappers that came before you and having a great knowledge of the game .

This applies to every aspect of life, especially boxing.
Studying and analyzing fights/fighters and yourself make you able to correct flaws and apply things you learned from your coach and fighters you watched.
I myself improved my left hook greatly by watching studying Joe Frazier and Oscar De La Hoya etc.

Studying fighters careers and history make you understand that many of them are human like us and didn't start of as fully developed killing machines from birth.
Infact many of them weren't that talented at the beginning.
What made the difference was that they were eager to learn and always came back next time to learn more.

Its hard to believe that a normal footballer eg someone like quaresma with more desire could be anywhere near the player Messi is and will become. He gets better every year and is the best in the world at 22-23 hes one of the best players ever, you have to have some "god given talent" as it were to achieve that. Anyone with enough training could be Titus Bramble but not Messi...

I say talent doesnt exist but good genetics. In combat sports it definantly pays to have more type I muscle than type II which is decided at birth. (Type I is also known as fast-twitch muscle fiber) for it is speed and perhaps structure of limbs that can benefit a wannabe fighter. I say hard work is what gave the faster fighter his appearance of talent. All other factors like coordination, agility, reflex and timing are all attributes of training and are nobodys birth right, they are cultivated. Floyd Mayweather has been training since he was 7, his speed is something he was born with but I can confidently say he acquired through tireless practice all of his other attributes which some would call talent. Personaly I would take offense to that cause it just makes it sound a little too much like it came easy.. after all his chant isnt IM BORN WITH THIS, IM TALENTED, its HARD WORK, DEDICATION! thats my two cents as a boxing coach, good question.

Iran Barkely had little natural talent if any and he won 2 world titles from busting his ass and being one tough s.o.b..........Rockin'

It's a matter of perspective. Will you get to the top10 of the world by hard work alone? Nope. Can you be a decent boxer or a good amateur by hard work? Yes. But then again to be a good pro you need the belief that you will reach the top. Mohammedini also is spot on. Anyways in my opinion what many people lack is introspection or guidance and the ability to listen. How and what to improve. Training can be VERY inefficient if you don't have your head in the game. I knew a guy who did mt and he was **** although he trained harder than anyone because he only liked to train things he was good at, ultimately being one-dimensional and predictable. . For example I talked to my trainer and he told me he has np training older people and they could become good amateur fighters if they are willing to learn, I guess it's harder to get through to adults. Imo boxing is a very diverse sport, you can have success with different abilities, just have to play it right.
