I hate running period. But at least on a treadmill I can watch something good on tv that helps me to forget that I'm even running. And I turn up the incline to 1.0 to 2.0 and it's supposed to closer simulate real running outside. But the main benefit to running on the treadmill for me is that my knees don't seem to hurt as much as when running on the asphalt.

I think a treadmil is so much easier than running outdoors because you are running on a moving surface. It's almost as though the track on a treadmill helps move your feet along, making running easier.

running outside feels better and more comfortable. i run on tredmil when weather is bad and just lazy. but for somereason i can run further and harder faster longer outside on the track or park than on tredmil.

I run outside during the summer and fall, i bought a treadmill last fall cause running outside during the winter here sucks. I feel they are probably the same, only difference is you can't slowdown on the treadmill.

I sell treadmills and elipticals as my job. It really just depends on what you're looking for. Yes you will get more pain in your shins, knees, hips, and back as a result of running on the pavement because its harder.

Change your footstrike and you'll experience less pain in your shins. There's too much shock going into your legs from running on the road and thats where you get shin splints from. Learn to run on the balls of your feet and you'll get less pain.

Treadmills are good as a substitue. They are also good for their incline which you can't always find outside unless you live in the hills.
