Running on a treadmill is definitely better than nothing, but nothing beats running outside; More resistance more variation in terrain. When you're running on a treadmill it's within a controlled environment. I personally prefer running outside. Even if I add a steep incline on the treadmill, it's just not the same. I'm not going to say I never use a treadmill, but if I want to get the most out of a run, I do it outside.
I've personally decided to ditch running in favor of cycling. You get to work your quads and hamstrings much more, which for me is what always got tired in the ring, and I can put in much much longer training sessions without having to worry about getting to tired and hurting an ankle or something. I still run once a week or so to keep my calves strong, but for the most part, my cardio has been switched completely to the bike.

You can put in more time because its not as taxing.
"He found that if you ride at 15 mph, you burn 31 calories per mile. This means if you ride 20 miles you burn 20 x 31 = 620 calories. Take the 620 calories and divide by 110 calories per mile for running and you get 5.63 miles of running to burn the same number of calories. Therefore, riding a bicycle 20 miles at an average 15 miles per hour is equal to running 5.6 miles at any speed."
Biking is better than nothing but I prefer running. Also I'm curious, how does biking work your quads and hams more? Running would work your legs a lot more form what I know.
Edit: I'm seeing in some places that biking may target quads more
i do enjoy running outside more so then on a treadmill but running outside is very taxing on my joints and my lower back so i do most of my running on the treadmill. also i do a lot of my running before i lift at the gym so the treadmill is right there for me. i see the treadmill as more of a challenge due to the fact that you cant slow down unless you change the speed. your forced to run at a set pace unlike running outdoors where you may decrease in speed without even knowing it. i like the aspect of keeping an exact pace or speeding up and holding that pace. it helps to gauge what effect the speed has on how im feeling and if i need to up the pace. i agree that nothing beats the good old outdoors but since i do a lot of my running before lifting its the treadmill for now. ill do some long distance running maybe once or twice a week outside though.

I been doing alot of biking as well atleast 2 hours a week its a good low impact exercise for my knees and helps to balance everything out from all my running.
as far as running though i do either theres a nice 6 mile lap i do out side thats 3 hills up 2 down one way and 3 down 2 up the other and its just one hill after another a good hard run. as far as tread mill i recently got the nordic track incline trainer its freaking awesome 20% incline at 6 mph pretty fun i try to do shorter runs on this 3-5 miles.
