3 miles in 18 minutes is really great, but I'm not sure it would necessarily indicate a 5 minute mile were you to just run one. I'm not far off eighteen minutes for three miles but cant scratch a five minute mile yet.

Why not give it a try for fun, see how you do, it would be great to hear from you.

          Let's do some math.

How HARD would I have to go to run a Mile in 5 minutes.

Let's say one mile in 5. 60:5 is 12. So set the threadmill to 12 miles an hour, and after 5 minutes, you shouldve run a mile.

Running on a treadmill isn't the same! I sincerely hope no one's quoted times here are based on that.

A treadmill has to accelerate you to that speed, plus it is dictating your pace......it is forcing you to run at the speed you've programmed and that is if its accurate in the first place. The best way to check your times is on a proper track with you dictating your own pace, do four laps of 400 metres and that takes you to the mile.

Even folks who can genuinely beat the 5 minute mile will admit, the pace you have to keep up is ridiculously quick for a non professional athlete.

I think I've read that Roger Bannister averaged over 15MPH when he ran the first sub 4 minute mile. That really is incredible. I'm not sure what the record is now.

Its quite simply an incredible pace, no two ways about it. It would feel like a four minute sprint to even decent athletes. I dont know what the world record is right now. The training required to get you to that level is immense and that is if you are a natural.

I would be faster on a proper flat running track than on gravel (for these figures) but here are a few of the times I am trying to beat in laps on the same section:

                  0.5 mile: 2:29
1 mile: 5:35 (funny that! Being 1 second off the thread starter.)
                  2 miles: 12:13
                  4.5 miles: 28:57
                  10K (6.25 miles): 40:33
                  9 miles: 61:18

The best local runners do beat these times by a fair margin. The first barrier seems to be to crack the seven minute a mile mark as a comfortable running pace for several miles. I'm trying my best to get it closer and closer towards the 6 minute mile average, although I haven't managed 2 miles in this time yet!
Geez, 4.5 in 28:57. That's impressive to me. I did 4.75 in 37 mins. on Monday and I thought I was doing okay LoL.
