Yeah, he did take a lot of flush shots, I think perhaps pride played a part. Vera was throwing a lot and maybe Lee wanted to throw back rather than get on his bike and jab his way out of trouble.
I'd never seen Vera before this, but he looked like a good fighter. If he works on his own weaknesses he might get somewhere in a year or two. Hard to believe he got KO'D in 2 rounds not that long ago.
I think the stoppage was premature and perhaps he would've gotten back to his corner, cleared his head and boxed his way to a points victory. Maybe not, but hopefully they'll have a rematch at some point in the future(2009/2010 or so).
hmmm it varies with fighters
some keep there left down low (haye, mayweather)
my guess is the pride thing
Having your hands down -- not as down as in that pic, but in a Philly Shell or even a low guard -- allows you to slip faster. Try doing a sit-up with your hands on your head, then doing a sit up with your hands on your beltline, and you'll see the difference immediately.
The problem comes when you have your hands low and DON'T slip, or zig when you should've zagged.
I just watched this.. it was on late..like 2 in the morning in England... no advertised or anything.
Poor Andy Lee. Vera opened his face up with his elbow -i don't know what "da hell" Teddy Atlas was talking about....and don't get me started on Joe Tessitores new beard.

This Philly Shell nonsense has become rather fashionable these days, and I have noticed that a number of the foolish young boxers emerging from the Kronk gym are adopting it. It was what Cintron was trying to do when Felliciano made him look bad. Margarito will make him look even worse!
When I was young young boxers would imitate Muhammad Ali, and as a result get themselves knocked out. Bouncing up and down on your toes is a waste of time, and when you do it with your hands down it becomes a dangerous waste of time. Styles which has serious technical flaws should NEVER be imitated. Just because Floyd Mayweather can make Philly Shell work, does not mean the rest of us mere mortals can do it too.

****in' A. I hope you don't misundertand; I don't use the Philly Shell. I'm way too old, big, and slow for that ****. Give me a peekaboo guard any day. I'm an armored personnel carrier in boxing trunks.

You constantly manage to contribute the most useless pieces of advice.
