I find that a squarer stance gives me heavier punches but mostly I like a squarer stance because of the mobility. I like to fight close, being short for my weight class.
I know a guy in my weight class at my gym, though, who has a beautiful, textbook-perfect, side-on stance, and sparring with him is like catching cannonballs for three minutes. Punching power can be developed in any stance; it's like a good golf swing. Power comes from perfect technique. Find what works and refine it.
