  • Foods/Things that suppress hunger

Anyone know any really filling, healthy foods....I try to do the whole 5 small meals a day thing but what I've been ending up doing is one big meal with little things like granola bars here and there....

so know any filling healthy foods?

The best P4P filling food is oatmeal. All day. Anytime. Fifty flavors of cheap instant oatmeal and microwave ovens in every breakroom give you no excuse.

Also, low-sodium clear soup -- chicken and noodle, chicken and rice, etc. Fills you up and makes you feel like you're eating something, but very few calories; the only problem is, soup is generally not nutritionally dense. Fruits with a high water content are good, too -- apples & oranges are my favorite. Two apples will fill you up. My sister's a nutritionist -- she says you could eat a dozen apples every day and not get fat from it.

Beef jerky is quick and always handy. Canned or smoked fish on water crackers is another good snack food and high in Omega 3's. I like salmon, myself.

Clif Bars just came out with a new high-protein bar; I forget the name but I saw them in the store this morning and bought a couple. 20g protein, 270 calories, no artificial crap. Real cane sugar, oats, chicory, & soy protein. The chocolate mint flavor was very good. The chocolate coating has flax seed oil in it so it's a bit waxy but you get used to it.

A cup of black coffee is a good way to fill up, too. The caffeine gets you going and black coffee has zero calories.

    Hope this helps.

EDIT: You want something to stick to your ribs for awhile, try my breakfast shake; I believe it's in the Recipes thread but I'll RP it here:

    ------------

    Fraidycat's Breakfast Shake

    1 cup quick oats
    2 scoops whey protein
    2 cups nonfat milk*
    1/2 cup (1/2 a fist-sized hunk) frozen berries**

    * substitute apple cider for milk if you're lactose intolarant -- or just for a change

** instead of berries, you can use a banana, or a tablespoon of peanut butter, or Ovaltine, or whatever. Something to give it flavor and to add some natural sugar (sugar assists with protein uptake.) Frozen berries are pretty cheap, though.

Put it all in a blender, whip till frothy, and chug half of it. Put the other half in the fridge and drink it after your workout. With a lid on the blender, it'll keep for a few days in the fridge. ~400 calories, 40g protein, 2g fat in 1/2 a serving.

This is very true. Also, a lot of what we think is hunger is actually thirst.

staying hydrated is so crucial. You don't realize you are usually... but it gives you so much more energy throughout the day. Adam Sandler had it right....**** power/energy drinks, all you need is a little H2O.
