  • The Real Fight: The Red Meat Battle

Red meat for all it's worth is delicious. No doubt. But is the health risk worth it. It takes twice as long for red meat to digest in your system (It is known for clogging arteries over a period of time). Weaning yourself off may take sometime. I would suggest reducing your consumption, from once a week to once every two weeks, to once every month, then completely do away with it. It's a sure fire way to weight loss also.
I went Cold Turkey years ago, and haven't looked back since. droping from a husky 192lb to a lean 178lbs in a few months. I feel lighter and have more mobility and endurance. I was an asthmatic for much of my chilhood throughout, but since cutting out the red meat I have yet to experience respiratory problems (clogged arteries mean less oxygen entering the body), I basically follow a Chicken, Turkey, and Fish diet. Try substituting these with Tofu and Soy Meat as an alternative sometimes.
Worrying about the loss of protein intake, try eating more beans. Not a bean eater, soy meat happens to be delicious, its the closest thing to beef and it has more protein.

If by "red meat" you mean "cow," then I agree that it should be reduced in any diet. I eat a lot of venison and game, though. Got three grouse yesterday!

Sorry i love steak too much, it's very hard to get away from red meat if you live in aus. I seem to be doing fine with my current healthy diet, so if it's not broke don't fix it.

Why wait for it to break? Provention is better than procrastination.

Because i am fitter than 99% of the population i would guess and seeing as though i live at home i can not reject food given to me. It's not the major part of my diet like once or twice a week and i would not give up steak for ever. I am however cutting out a lot of milk and processed wheat as i think that is far worst for your body than red meat which our digestive systems have taken in for much longer than those foods (apart from milk when we are infants of course i'm talking cows milk)

I understand your point about being healthy at the present time, but I was saying that its better to prevent damage nowrather than waiting for it in the future.

Sorry i did a little research and did not find anything really negative about lean red meat at all.

"Moreover, while some cuts of meat are higher in saturated fat, all red meat is high in protein, iron, B vitamins, zinc, choline, and selenium, a mineral implicated in preventing cancer and improving cardiovascular health. Ounce for ounce beef has twice the thiamine and riboflavin, three times the iron, five times the zinc, and seven times the B12 of chicken. Beef also contains conjugated linoleic acid, (CLA), which has inhibited cancer growth in laboratory animals. Half of the fat in beef is monosaturated fat, (like olive oil), which has been hailed as having many health benefits. Less than half of the total fat in beef is saturated fat and one third of it is stearic acid, a particular saturated fat that has no effect on cholesterol.

Now granted, if your goal is to lose weight, all fats are equally high in calories. Even I would recommend leaner cuts and in moderation. But if your concern is heart disease, keep in mind though that numerous other factors, other than fat, play a role. Most physicians agree that genetic makeup is a significant determinant. Some people’s biochemistry will produce higher amounts of cholesterol no matter what they eat. Conversely, we all know individuals who have ate rich diets, engaged in other risky practices and lived to a ripe old age. Genes are a whimsical and unfair bestowment of fate.

Genetics aside, your age, sex, physical activity, stress, weight, substance use, environmental pollutants, personality, and other medical conditions, all influence whether you’ll be visiting a cardiologist someday. Yet I’ve met individuals who ignore many controllable factors, who smoke or drink to excess, and yet incessantly monitor their dietary fat. Trust me, all the fish and vegetables in the world will not save you if genetics are not on your side and you’re ignoring all of the other variables. "

Lean red meat is very healthy for you, along with white meats and chicken, cutting it out completely for me seems ******. However if it suits your body fine, aka genetics. In the original users post he noticed his asthma went, that also may have had to do with a new exercise program a long with losing 20 pounds. My mum's asthma gets terrible if she doesn't walk everyday, along with my dad's blood pressure. Although i seem to have missed both bullets there, while my sister caught them both. I wouldn't drop red meat completely as in the quote...
