Overall, JC is the best SMW, in light of the opposition he has fought. Ok, you can argue they were not fights against Jones or Hopkins or Sven, but the opposition were still considerably tougher than Kessler. This debate will hopefully be finally settled in February or March 2007.
Absolutely. Calzaghe has faced opposition of an infintely higher standard than Kessler has (and maybe even Kessler, who is clearly untested). Hell, Lacy had faced significantly higher opposition.

Doesn't this all seem so much like early 2006 all over again? The young title holder going over to destroy Joe in order to unifying the belts.

To be fair to Joe he was supposed to face Collins, who'd just beaten Benn and Eubank twice each, but he chose retire because he knew Joe was all wrong for him. Instead he faced the guy that Collins had taken the belt off so there's not a lot of paper in that title. Lacy had made a few defences against reasonable opposition and was unstoppable according to the less educated, so that belt carries some weight too.

Kessler probably is the best of the rest although I still think Lacy could give him massive problems as Kessler's nowhere near as slick as Joe and may not be able to keep away from him.

There's no reason for this fight not to happen now Hopkins is out of the picture so bring it on, I'm with you on that one.

Look.. No sane person would call Calzaghe a bum. I think he´s a sure top two

Calzaghe has a better record. Can´t argue with that either.
Kessler had major surgery i his hand and his back twice, and his recordlist should only have been around 25-30 fights, before he got a chance at a title. But they have been careful and made 3 build-ups of Kessler..

So why dont i rate Calzaghe higher?
He won a vacant wbo belt, and settled - and claimed to be the best smw.. That is simply not enough! He´s had good opposition, but never went for the best.. Jeff Lacy comes along, a free belt - (The same with Kessler taking the wbc belt.. Just a day in the office).

You can´t belive Kessler has two belts with the record list he has.. The reason is quite simple, you win belts by seeking out champions. Calzaghe is a high risk fight for Kessler i agree to that. So isn´t he one hell of a mother****er to seek it, instead of wanting too make $ now he has the chance?? (Kessler is far from wealthy compared to Joe, danish tv and 5 mill people don´t generate enough $ to buy new shoes).
Being a great fighter, is facing the best you can get...

Really hope this fight will happen.. It would be fight of the year, and if you think Kessler is a lucky bum with two belts, you got a nice surprice waiting..

[QUOTE=SHB;1885650] Hell, Lacy had faced significantly higher opposition.

Lacy would (altso) look like a fool against Mundine, if he fights like he did Joe.. This would be a very interresting test for the "new" Lacy..

And -if it means anything to you- The worst fight from Kessler ever, is the mundine fight(due to injury), everybody else has been blown away. And Calzaghe has looked alot worse than Kessler did in that fight.

Calzaghe has definately fought a better quality of opponent than Kessler:

          Calzaghe:
          Byron Mitchell
          Jeff Lacy
          Richie Woodhall
          Robin Reid
          Chris Eubank
          Charles Brewer

          Kessler:
          Dingaan Thobela
          Manny Siaca
          Anthony Mundine
          Marcus Beyer
          Eric Lucas

Kessler has upped his competition lately, but hasn't fought anyone as good as Jeff Lacy or a prime Robin Reid.

Mundine is ****. Lacy would not look like a fool against him. I know it's all the rage to ridicule fighters once they lose but how on earth does someone fall from #2 in the ratings to having Mundine make him look a fool in one fight? It's utter nonsense.

Kessler's untested. Maybe he's the ****, maybe he's not. Looks very "european" to me, but maybe I'm wrong and he can adapt.

It'd be obscene, what Lacy would do to Mundine.

Sure, Lacy is a nobody, even though on that win alone it boosted Calzaghe into the top 10 P4P.

Think before you type, (Danish) dip****s.

He's faced plenty of very good fighters in his career already and beaten most of them impressively. Admittedly most of them came in the first half of his career but they are there none the less. Joe had beaten better fighters after 25 or so fights than Kessler has after 38.

Sorry but beating up on a 35 year old Beyer and bums like Siaca and Mundine doesn't put you ahead of the guy who's been widely regarded as the best in the division for the last 9 years. Not even close. The only one who needs to prove anything is Kessler. I can't believe he holds 2 belts with his resume.

Jesus, Mary and Holy Joseph. You must be gay,why dont you **** Calzaghe in his ass and lick his balls :gay:

What else can u expect from Calzaghe? he NEVER has had any interest in unifying and cleaning out the division, which is why he also never had Sven Ottke on his wishlist...and he's using the same excuse not to fight Kessler, "oh, he's not American so it's not a big fight"...Calzaghe maybe has a point about Kessler's popularity over here, but if Kessler were to become a big name over here Calzaghe still would duck him...and i wish Hopkins would take Calzaghe at 175 because even the old Hop would whip that ass...and Calzaghe still is scared of Roy Jones, even after Jones being KTFO 2x...he doesn't mention Jones, and he can't say that Jones still isn't a big name fight...Calzaghe is scared to fight real challenges period...

There are not nearly as many Danes on the site... (2-3??) and they are somewhat more reasonable... KINDA.. but They remind me of the PINOYs.. as I already mentioned.. not nearly as BAD.. but the potential is there.. I realise when your NATION has no claim to fame.. and finally someone steps out onto the WORLD stage.. even if thats only the BOXING world.. BUT HOLY ****ING HELL shut UP already PLEASE... Kessler is NOT I REPEAT is NOT the second coming... He is a stand up fast handed TYPICAL EURO fighter who knocked out another TYPICAL stand UP **** Euro fighter.. and NOT much else.. I am not saying the GUY is **** or has NO potential.. BUT reading these POSTS makes me want to puke.. LETS keep things in perspective BOYS.. I would hate to see your YOUR Danish PASTRIE asses join the LIKES of the PINOY on your inabilty to have an honest reasonable discussion Simply because YOu feel the need to hang on the NUTS of a fellow countryman..
                  GOOD GRIEF!!

Calzaghe ducked Ottke, and is now ducking Jones? Oh dear god.

Next week, Calzaghe ducks Prince Naseem (well, Naz would never get down to 168 these days ....)

Rock on Joe, you're ****ing great!

The majority of Calzaghe's defences have been against complete nobodies (Sobot, Thornberry, McIntyre, Jiminez, Salem, Bika), domestic opposition (Starie, Reid, faded Woodhall) and average "past it" ex-champions (Brewer, Mitchell).

I should mention that Robin Reid was still performing well back then, and almost beat Calzaghe. He still remains one of Calzaghe's "toughest" tests. After nine years? Robin Reid? Nine? Anyway
