He deserves his status as a top fighter but yes, he is quite overrated. The deck is always stacked in his favour and quite a few of his wins were against faded and/or smaller opponents. Against his best competition he has either lost (Mayweather, Golovkin x2) or narrowly won (Lara fight was razor thin, Jacobs).

Contrary to the peddled narrative, Golovkin actually boxed better in the rematch than the first fight. Canelo is given far too much extra credit simply because he didn't box off the back foot the entire fight. Instead, he was soundly outboxed at centre ring in a 117-111/116-112 type fight. Both bouts were clear wins for Golovkin, hence Canelo doing everything possible to prevent a trilogy meeting.

In short: top fighter but not all he's made out to be.

Canelo fanatics keep hyping Canelo like he stopped GGG twice or something. Like we all here are ****** and haven`t seen the fights.
Fanatics don't really count though. It's more about what objective fans think and here's my quick take:

      1. Both GGG fights were close. I thought Canelo lost the first one but a draw wasn't too far-fetched. I thought the rematch could have been a draw too but Canelo edged it. No robbery in either case

      2. Canelo fought Austin Trout when many thought he was too green. He fought Erislandy Lara when everyone knew it would be a difficult style matchup. I thought Lara edged the fight but I don't necessarily think Canelo got a gift. I like Lara but he was on his bike too much and it costs him. Canelo beat Trout clean in a close, competitive fight.

      3. He was a unified champion at 154 and universally recognized as Floyd Mayweather's top challenger in the division. Canelo was not green going into that fight; he was a young champion on the rise who happened to be in with an all-time great putting on his last truly great performance.

He's obviously a clever and talented boxer with many excellent attributes, and his record on the fact of it is excellent even if many of his best fights are tinged with controversy. I thought he lost both times vs. Golovkin for instance, plus there's the ambiguity around those failed tests, and just the way in general that every wack or suspect judge's card is always in his favour. That controversy is probably the only thing that's stopping me from acknowledging him as number 1, as well as the bias I can't help but hold against him thanks to his personality - I think he exploits status as one of the sport's premier cash cows by being a massive diva - he just seems to be impossible to work with from a promotional or matchmaking point of view. It seems like nary a month goes by without some kind of new dispute taking place that involves him.

All that said, I still think you'd have to be ****** to not admit, however begrudgingly that might be, that despite all of that he's still an excellent fighter. I don't personally think he's P4P no. 1 right now, but all of that's likely to change if he legitimately beats Callum Smith at the weekend - that's not an easy fight no matter what anyone says.

Really ? You've just learned this lol.

Also, note that he actually isn't as popular as many may portray him to be, there was a reason why DAZN pulled out of the contract, as they grossly over rated him.

Remember this, Mexicans in the US follow any Mexican as they feel it's their patriotic requirement, whereas Mexicans in Mexico follow who they rate or like.

A large factor is also his orange hair as it makes him an immediate novelty.

Also, I'm a firm believer that wining fights by robbery actually make you more popular.

So on the street he isn't rated as highly as you might see in a boxing forum full of Mexicans...

shady judging, and already got popped for PEDs, his best win is against his equally overrated boxer in GGG. GGG was promoted as some feared killer, looked good knockin out no hopers, but under performed when he stepped up in competition. While talking about Mexican style, he relied mostly on jabs in the Canelo rematch, you're not gonna win a points match against Canelo lol

Canelito was a known very good fighter way before anyone had heard of either GGG or Tyson Fury. YKDSAB.
