I'm choosing to be optimistic about the quality of this fight. It's pretty much always a terrible idea to judge a fighter off their worst showing, even if it's their most recent. People are fickle as hell. "Only as good as your last performance" and all. While I understand the logic of "Canelo and Ryder have similar builds and size dynamic against Smith, and Canelo is a far superior Ryder, ergo...", it's also very reductive. You have to consider the possibility of Smith being guilty of looking right past Ryder and not putting in the proper work, including half assed/rushed cutting. And though it isn't an excuse, I think there's something to the idea of it being hard to "get up" (for some at least) for a guy who can give you a terrible night, won't gain you a ton of clout in victory, and will also get you thrown to the wolves in a loss. Think your Porters, Korobovs, Derevyanchenkos...Rosados...I think Ryder slots right in. In short Smith may be a a completely different animal here, especially if we take him at his word he's been training accordingly well before the inked contract.

        On paper, a good fight.

In reality; I doubt anybody under 175 beats Canelo.

I’m telling ya Smith will make it a war his size and reach will cause canelo a lot of problems.

I think Canelo’s IQ is high enough now, that he can adjust in fight. I think he’ll be fine, especially against a taller slower fighter who isn’t much of a mover.

Smith resides in Liverpool UK there has been a stage 4 lockout since late October if he hasnt been training since then as a professional boxer then its his fault.

Yes short notice to casuals. However, real elite PROFESSIONALS (Mayweather et al) stay in fighting shape at all times. Boxers of yesteryear fought weekly and at the very least bi-weekly on a continual basis.

Smith fights at 168. If Smith vs BJS was a possibility for Q4, on standby for any announcement since June, then it means BJS and Smith had 5 months to stay active in the gym. If BJS and Smith are held to high a degree with Ring IQ with fans claiming they can beat Canelo, then the idea of “preparation” is flawed in trying to amp Canelo haters that a win by the Mexican won’t be kosher.

Both BJs and Smith were both waiting for Canelo. BJs chose Murray. BJS vs Smith didn’t make noise to fight each other anyways.

I honestly think Benavidez has a chance to beat him
