It was just 2 years ago when he went up to 168 to fight Rocky Fielding to test the waters that this board was full of people saying he would never fight a dangerous fighter like Callum Smith at 168. LOL. Too predictable. He'd never give GGG a rematch until he did and beat him. He'd never fight Daniel Jacobs until he did and beat him. He'd never ever fight anyone of worth at 175 until he fought Kovalev and KOed him.

Canelo is taking on all comers right now, the people you say he won't fight right now are the ones you'll poo poo when he signs to fight them in the next few years. 160 and 168, he's taking on all comers. 175? Probably more selective.

Callum Smith is the #1 ranked Super Middleweight in the World on Boxrec, Ring, and ESPN. This is the toughest fight possible for Canelo to take, period.

There’s a good chance Smith beats him, I’d put a few quid on him having a shot.
Don’t compare him to his brothers, he’s always been the one to watch.
It’s a shame this isn’t happening in normal times, they could have sold out anfield football stadium.

He actually didn’t lose to John Ryder, but you can go on pretending that he did if you like. Callum Smith remains the reigning WBA world champion. All fighters have off nights, even Canelo. You’re writing Smith off because of an off night, but more hardcore fans than you see what this guy is capable of. He kicked the **** out of George Groves who was coming off a fairly easy win over Eubank. This guy is not Rocky Fielding.

A certain segment of fans are going to criticize Canelo no matter what he does, but I think Smith is a very credible opponent - and a logical choice given the timing of this fight. There isn't a lot of money to share with another marquee name fighter, so who better to fight than a legitimate world champion with no name? Some people won't be satisfied unless Canelo fights a cruiserweight or higher, but I think this pick is a very credible challenge.

Exactly, and the funny thing is that Canelo would be criticized even more if he fought John Ryder. People would ask why Canelo is going after a guy who just lost instead of trying to claim a legitimate title at 168.

The problem is not Smith having "lost" to Ryder. It's just that - a shot Groves aside - he has fought no one at elite level, and even had a few difficulties with some of them.

Logic tells that Smith gets obliterated by Canelo. It's a matter of levels.

Smith has a title so this is totally off base, especially after being out of the ring for more than a year.

Nonsense. He has a title 2 years now and knocked out George Groves. He is qualified.
