Callum Smith was mentioned a long time ago as a potential Canelo opponent so I don't think he's been sitting on the couch this whole time. Also, if the timing was an issue then he could have declined the fight like Caleb Plant did.

I believe that Callum Smith expects to be ready if he signed the contract.

Most Canelo fans probably didn't see Smith vs Ryder but gonna talk up his quality as an opponent anyway

Smith arguably is the highest profile super middle so he's just going for 'top guy'. But from a fans point of view I cant shake that Smith is carrying no momentum into the fight. Zero.
I know what you mean. It reminds me of when Zab Judah got upset by Carlos Baldomir with a Mayweather fight on the horizon. Zab definitely lost momentum as a result but he performed much better against Floyd and the fight was entertaining.

I suspect that Callum Smith with do something similar, at least in terms of looking much better than he did in his last fight.

The fact that you thought he had a chance says more about you than anything else. This is levels above fighting a semi retired guy at a weight hadn't fought at in 4 years

Yea, fair enough, that’s a fair way of looking at it. I think people are still viewing canelo as the small mw moving up to fight these big guys, but it’s possible canelo can’t even make mw anymore. Either way, the guy is rated 1 in the division, so we can’t ask too much more I guess.

It is the best fight that can be made at 168lbs. Smith is considered one of the best and he holds a legit title. Smith is bigger than Canelo and he is unbeaten. It is a good fight to be made.

smith just lost. we know this and canelo especially knows this. in reality benavidez and plant should be above him not based on stellar resume but simply based on smith losing. now this doesnt mean smith sucks just cause he took a loss but if you look at the totality of his resume and performances he doesnt seem to be anything more than a solid fighter. he barely beat erik skogland. if hes staying at 168 then ok start beating these guys but we know how canelo division hops/makes up his own divisions/makes fights only when he is ready so that is pretty frustrating. he didnt want to fight at 160 when ggg was around so he fought at 155, he will only fight at 175 if its against an old kovalev but not beterbiev until he is ready it seems.

This fight has been talked about as a possibility for months, if Smith isn't ready and accepted the fight thats really on him not Hearn.
