Michael Hunter Enters Free Agency, as Matchroom Boxing Opts Not To Renew Contract

American heavyweight contender Michael Hunter and Matchroom Boxing are parting ways after the promotional outfit opted not to renew its contract with the fighter.

Hunter was told by Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith on Wednesday that he will no longer be a part of the promotional outfit’s plans moving forward, the fighter told BoxingScene.com.

“It’s all good, that’s just how life moves. It was a business move. Nothing is ever promised, and you don’t know what the next move will be,” Hunter told BoxingScene.com. “I don’t want to be fighting for someone who doesn’t want me anyway.”

“We did not make him a new offer following the expiration of his contract,” Hearn told BoxingScene.com. “There is a lot of heavyweight congestion and with the current issues and backlog I didn’t feel we could deliver him fights with our outstanding obligations within the division...”

“I was never fully embraced. I was more like an independent contractor for them,” said Hunter. “They didn’t want me to fight their in-house guys. I’m the boogeyman to them. It was hard for them to find fights for me, but I found that flattering that opponents avoided me. That’s the best badge of honor I could get … I know [not renewing my contract] was a business move, and I have no ill feelings toward them. I was a high risk, low-reward fighter for opponents.”

Hunter was offered the Hrgovic fight he declined it on Joshua undercard when he rematched Ruiz .

What in house guys is he referring to, he fought Bakole, Kuzmin and Povetkin. This guy lies a bit I’m starting to notice .

On the fight ? Hrgovic will smash him up pretty good ,probably around a 8 round stoppage.

Yeah, but he got Povetkin instead! Povetkin was higher ranked fighter. Hunter wanted Joshua, and he wanted it before Ruiz came into the picture!

Hunter Warns Joshua: I'll Be Tougher Challenger Than Miller

“I’m just patiently waiting. I’m ready to take it if they give me the opportunity. I’m definitely taking it. I just hope I get it. Eddie Hearn and Joshua definitely know I’m ready to take the fight. I’m definitely taking it. I just hope I get it.

“They have to pick the right opponent and that is what I am. Some of these guys don’t want to fight. I’m a rising star, I work with Matchroom and DAZN, so I’m a better fit than the others anyways.

I sort of remember Eddie saying he past over Hunter because "they" didn't like Hunter's style for Joshua! He never said who "they" were!

This wouldn’t mean much all those guys are in house fighters . Hunters claim is false .

He didn’t pick Hunter the same reason they let him go which is no draw value . He knew Ruiz would be an exciting fight .

Hunter has no chance against A.J stylistically and even after the win over Ruiz he admitted A.J was much better then he thought . Hunter has almost the same chance against Hrgovic , it will be a one sided affair. You’ll see why he went for the much smaller Povetkin if he takes the Hrgovic fight ,it won’t be close at all .

This dude is an idiot, man. Don't bother. He doesn't understand why somebody would pick Povetkin over Hrgovic. I didn't even think it needed to be explained but I tried, too.

Hunter probably beats Hrgovic the same way he beat Bakole.

We know one thing for sure, Hunter is better than Whyte! Ask Povetkin! LOL!

Filip Hrgovic is a junior amateur world champion from 2010, European amateur champion from 2015, bronze Olympian from 2016. He is a Top boxer from the very top of the world and it is distasteful to compare him with Bakole. He has never been on the floor and has resolved all matches of the last 2 years with interruptions. Tough task for Hunter, too hard!

Thanks for sharing that with us. Hrgovic fought nobody as a pro. he is somewhere top 30 in the world, boxrec has him at 24. Bakole is more proven than Hrgovic, Bakole would be a step up for Hrgovic as well. The best win of Hrgovic is Molina, that tells enough.
