Michael Hunter Enters Free Agency, as Matchroom Boxing Opts Not To Renew Contract

American heavyweight contender Michael Hunter and Matchroom Boxing are parting ways after the promotional outfit opted not to renew its contract with the fighter.

Hunter was told by Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith on Wednesday that he will no longer be a part of the promotional outfit’s plans moving forward, the fighter told BoxingScene.com.

“It’s all good, that’s just how life moves. It was a business move. Nothing is ever promised, and you don’t know what the next move will be,” Hunter told BoxingScene.com. “I don’t want to be fighting for someone who doesn’t want me anyway.”

“We did not make him a new offer following the expiration of his contract,” Hearn told BoxingScene.com. “There is a lot of heavyweight congestion and with the current issues and backlog I didn’t feel we could deliver him fights with our outstanding obligations within the division...”

“I was never fully embraced. I was more like an independent contractor for them,” said Hunter. “They didn’t want me to fight their in-house guys. I’m the boogeyman to them. It was hard for them to find fights for me, but I found that flattering that opponents avoided me. That’s the best badge of honor I could get … I know [not renewing my contract] was a business move, and I have no ill feelings toward them. I was a high risk, low-reward fighter for opponents.”

Guaranteeing him fights & throwing him in fights that make sense are two different things.

Love or hate Eddie he's not working the US promoter model.

I don't think that model is working for Andrade, Farmer, and it has already failed for Hunter! If Haney doesn't get Ryan Garcia next, I think he'll have to question his relationship too!

You could be right about that. And maybe Andrade & Tevin will be in a similar position where they aren't linked with Eddie but are on his rolodex when a fight pops up.

And the thing all those guys got in common is they are quality guys with un-TV friendly styles so it'll be a interesting thing to watch for if DAZN backs off US fights & goes for more international fights like I suspect they might.

Anyways, I'm sure you are picking Michael Hunter to be the next mandatory after he beats this big-stiff, right?
The beating Wilder took last time out was a rematch, ******.

Is that the Andrade who offered Charlo 7 Mill to fight? Not Eddie's fault if cowards won't take massive paydays to fight is it? A bit like you blamed Eddie for the other coward in Wilder turning down 100 Mill.

Farmer, the guy who lost to Jo Jo and is having a rematch with him? Farmer, the fighter Eddie offered 5 Mill to Davis to fight but that was turned down too?

It isn't Eddie's fault you house so many deluded cowards. He can't force a coward to fight any more than you can.
