Twenty two boxers died in 1953 alone. I remember "Boom Boom" Mancini vs Kim Duk-koo in 1982. Kim died four days after the fight. As a result of this, world championship fights were limited to 12 rounds. That was the last 15 rounder.

in 1995 I was at Gabriel Ruelas vs Jimmy Garcia on the under card of his brother's (Rafael Ruelas) lost title fight with Oscar De La Hoya at Caesars Palace.

I was a big time Joe Goossen and Ruelas brothers fan. I cheered on Gabe as he got the TKO only to be sick to my stomach when Jimmy died 13 days later, due to a blood clot on the brain.
And 1000's of face 1st types either lived to old ages, still fighting or living the good life right now.

Getting punched repeatedly on the head didn't kill Gatti, Tex Cobb, Julian Jackson, Holy, MAB, Erik, Khan, Margarito, 96% of the way back when guys (whose gloves were made for killing !).....On and on.

Hell. It wasn't the jimmied with gloves that killed Collins.

He died 3 years later in a car crash.

Too many examples of guys getting wrecked with no towels in sight and surviving for me to think Wilder's life was in danger and the towel saved him.

Wait to the end of the round and call the ref over. Tell the ref your guy is having an off night and please stop the fight.

Unless your guy is literally out on his feet and the ref is just standing there smiling, leave the towel alone.

          Imho
True there were likely sneakier ways for Mark to get the fight called. I just tend to doubt he wouldn't still be in the same position in most of those types of scenarios too cuz it'd likely been known he had influence in a stoppage if he was saying stuff to the ref.

To me Mark only saves his job by telling Wilder he would stop a fight if he deemed it necessary when Wilder brought up this sorta stuff between fights or in training camps in the past. Maybe he loses his job years ago if he'd done that or maybe he doesn't go against his own word or implied word of going along with Wilder's wishes.

I think if Mark had said how he'd react truthfully instead of a direct lie or implied lie, depending on how this message was conveyed among Team Wilder, there would have been less of a loyalty foul here that coulda allowed for Mark to still be on the team.

It'd be like hating on your friend who said he wouldn't lie for you to your face. When your wife calls him & he don't stick to your bs story it's on you not him. Now if he'd said he'd lie for me & then didn't he'd be in violation. Mark is in the latter situation. He has his own integrity intact, but his loyalty to his boy is questionable at best.

Mercer hits much harder than Fury
Morrison's chin is worse than Wilder's

                    Tommy survived

                      - -Never heard what Breland has to say, but he has the rest of his career to think of, and shooting off his mouth needlessly ain't needed for such an important position as trainer where mutual trust is needed.
