  • Decline of Golden Boy Promos

Years ago Oscar Boy Promotions dominated the industry.

Now it’s biggest stars Saul Alvarez Ryan Garcia both want a different promoter

top rank seems to be doing better than Oscar Boy Promotions these days.

from the end of 2012 to last yr the price of gold seems to have fallen badly, maybe that's got something to do with it, just a wild guess

it's on the up now tho

Short answer is Oscar isn't too bright.

Long answer...after the split with Haymon's fighters, GBP were always going to take time to re-build. That split changed the boxing landscape in a big way for years to come. But too often they struggle with simple things. For example Floyd did May/Sep fights every year and then retired, all Canelo had to do was step into that schedule but somehow GBP leave negotiations too late so fights don't happen or do happen but in November or some random time.

Usually when Oscar talks to the media it's to say something ******. He's said 'final offer, accept today or we're moving on' to several fighters and then made a better offer soon after because his PR move didn't work. Boxing promoting is obviously difficult, but Arum, Haymon make the right move for their fighters more often, and both seem to have better relationships with their guys than Oscar has with his.

Partly due to Oscar’s declining reputation but more importantly his increasing involvement in actual Golden Boy business. When Richard was in charge of the actual decisions and core business, things got done professionally and relationships with fighters were better. I feel like like Oscar is like Floyd, in that they are better being the face of the company but should not get involved in day to day decision making, they need to have strong execs in charge and LEAVE them to run the business.

richard made a comeback but quickly went silent

Oscar wanted to keep Richard at GBP but it didn’t happen

Al Haymon stole the majority of Oscar's roster and HBO got out of the boxing business.

That's what happened to Golden Boy Promotions.

And even still they have two potential stars coming up with Vergil Ortiz and Ryan Garcia. PBC has yet to create a star that wasn't with GBP first.

Yeah I remember GBP essentially had all the current PBC stars along with Canelo on Showtime.

Haymon was playing chess whilst Oscar was playing checkers though.

Agreed, but not too long ago, TR was in the same boat. PBC is still going strong on former GB fighters. Once they’re out of the pic, I want to see how they develop new talent

Lot of it is Karma. Wilder, Broner, Swift Garcia, Thurman... The initial phase of PBC was good and that generation of GBP has sailed imo. Who’s left at PBC? Davis? Spence, not too sure..

GBP is in the social media age so much of the “promotion” is practical. Their two stars in Canelo and Ryan Garcia have a combined 16mil followers. Trailing behind are Vergil and Munguía. The PBC and its fans made such a huge Stink about race/bias that the matchmakers can’t even focus on Ellis who in my opinion deserves the same hype as Boots Ennis. The PBC Haymonite kids put pressure on GBP to make fans feel it’s only about Hispanics..

Imo, Reynoso and Canelo are an integral part of Hispanic boxing. With Oscar Valdez, Andy Ruiz, Nery, Frank Sanchez... only a matter of time more will align with them... this is what DAZN should understand is affiliation. If and when Valdez leaves Top Rank he could’ve hopped over at DAZN.
