It is debatable, but Floyd has a fair argument. I would say he could say he's the greatest defensive counterpunching boxer in history. I wouldn't rate him equal to or above a prime 'Sugar' Ray Robinson, Ali and 'Sugar' Ray Leonard.

He would've had trouble with Thomas Hearns, and a few others. A more prime De La Hoya and Whitaker would be very tough to beat as well. But yes, he's the biggest earning, richest pro boxer in history, and he didn't take that much punishment, so he can look back on a great career.

Honestly If I could pick what career path to take I would take his over anyone else's. Like you pointed out, he became very rich (although he burns through his money pretty quick) and he took very little punishment in getting rich. What boxer past or present would not choose that? Talk is cheap.

Mike was highly technical pre prison. The problem was that everyone only cared about his knockouts and not how he achieved them. Mike's footwork, angles, feints, speed, ring generalship, cutoff etc were supreme and almost perfect.

Quite frankly I'm not into highlighting character flaws, but all the ducking talk and who they fought can be debated with Floyd coming out on top! - imo.

The famous Rope-A-Dope made two dopes out of the one who used it and the one who fell for it.....Marcianos best fights were against old over-the-hill cruiserweights that lacked skill and again - youth .....These so called greats didn't have what Mayweather had. But just like him they did have ambition and drive, doing very well for themselves, but not health-wise, which equates to LACKING in boxing defence.....

Mayweathers style wouldnt be pleasing, to say, someone who'd appreciate KO artists - or a dogged come forward determined rock em' sock em' guy like Gatti, Ward or even Marciano. It's why I'd rate Mayweather as one of the "very best," because his "style" wouldnt please everyone, but was VERY VERY effective - even against seek & destroy KO threats....Only thing though, KO artists usually leave themselves open for getting severely hurt or KO'd by someone someone just as tough.....Mayweather is one of the few very best for sure!!

Do you know when the cruiserweight division was even official? Do you know what weight Marciano was regardless of his class?
I give Mayweather all the credit for getting the job done in the ring. Outside the ring however he was a master at creating a fight in his favor. He always had control of the contract and in turn had control to make the fight in his favor. His opponents did not make excuses or care much because either way they got paid.

Unless a criteria is set, TBE will always be a debatable topic.

It will forever be a debatable topic because it’s impossible to have set in stone criteria. Too subjective a topic and down to personal opinion on which factors to place the most emphasis on.
Some people will focus on the Win/Loss column, with all types of variables thrown in, like quality of opposition, coming back from adversity, stylistic preference and just the eye test on how great the fighter looks.

For example RJJ has 9 losses, but put into context of him being a victim of his own ambition and never being the same fighter after moving up in weight, I place more emphasis on the eye test when rating him. The vinny Paz fight, were he totally shut him out in one of the rounds, was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen in a ring.

Personally I think Floyd is one of the greats but not the best ever. He could have done more with his considerable skill set but he coasted instead of daring to be great, both in the ring and in his choice of fights.

I can’t ever remember watching him in a fight he wasn’t supposed to win, of course it’s testament to the fighter he was that he was never the underdog. But even at elite level the best can find ways of challenging themselves, consequently he’s never had an Ali v Foreman, or Leonard v Hagler moment in his career.

He was but Floyd is a natural 147 thru and thru and only fought at 154 if it was lucrative. He only fought there 3 times and each time did Did between 1.5 and 2.7 million PPV buys. I thought Sergio was the goods but was to big and not enough money for Floyd.
