Canelo May Not Fight in 2020?

Boxing’s top attraction will miss both holidays and there’s growing doubt he’ll fight in 2020 at all.

That’s because Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions are engaged in a heated dispute with DAZN officials regarding the streaming service’s refusal to pay Canelo the $35 million guaranteed in his contract.
When it signed a five-year deal with DAZN in October 2018, Golden Boy promised to deliver at least two Canelo events annually with one against a premier opponent (deemed as such at DAZN’s sole discretion). Just who (besides Gennadiy Golovkin) qualifies as “premier” in today’s boxing landscape that features few stars is at the heart of the growing conflict between Canelo, Golden Boy and DAZN. Canelo doesn’t have his own contract with DAZN, sources tell The Athletic, but is part of Golden Boy’s pact with the platform.
And just who outside of GGG could partner with Canelo for such an event? There’s a carve-out in the contract for a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather, but that was simply due diligence on a pipe dream; Mayweather remains retired.

No one in the industry would be surprised if this matter headed to court. But to this juncture, Golden Boy hasn’t threatened legal action and DAZN has taken notice, confident in its position. In the past, GBP has sued PBC founder Al Haymon and Top Rank over different matters.

What a clutchphuck. Not having boxing's number one attraction fight in 2020 is terrible. If Jacobs/Kovalev are not considered good or premiere opponents, then who aside from GGG is considered that? If Canelo fought BJS or Smith, those two surely won't be considered premiere opponents. Andrade? Nope. Charlo? Nope. Plant? Nope. I want to see the list of opponents considered "premiere" for DAZN. Wanting Canelo to take a 50% pay cut is ridiculous. So because of the Canelo hold up, is that why no other cards have been announced yet for DAZN?

And interesting that Canelo doesn't have his own deal with DAZN. It makes sense that GBP leveraged Canelo to get their deal for the rest of the stable, but Canelo not having his own deal is interesting to say the least. Not sure why his management team would even sign off on something like that? DAZN is also clueless if they thought the Mayweather rematch could happen....And that it would happen on DAZN. ZERO percent chance even if Mayweather rematched Canelo that he wouldn't have it on SHO PPV.

Let's see how this ends up playing out.

Unbelievable, this is embarrassing. Those opponents got Canelo FOTY on almost every publication. This may be an attempt to just get out of Canelo's deal. Heck, get out of boxing entirely. Once again, I want to see who exactly is considered a premiere opponent?

Wait, so only Golovkin is a good opponent in their opinion and they know Golovkin is fighting Szeremeta next and are still behaving like this? The guys at the top don't seem to follow the sport if they don't like Canelo's 2019.

One would assume they have a wishlist of possible fights for him if they are requiring what they call premiere opponents

Yeah, that was odd and why his management team signed off on this is baffling.
