Can we have a serious talk about women's boxing

Domestic and journeyman level men's fights can indeed be exciting and compelling, but they don't get sold as anything other than what they are, and what they are is usually levels above even the very best women's fights.

It annoys the fuck out of me to hear boxers and boxing pundits toeing the PC line and telling what they surely know to be blatant lies. Stuff like .. "Katie Taylor isn't just one of the best female boxers in the game .. she's one of the best boxers in the game, male or female. Maybe the best boxer Ireland has ever produced ... blah, blah ...

People who surely know better were comparing Cecilia Brækhus to Joe Louis. Others talk about Claressa Shields surpassing Loma in terms of most world titles won in fewest pro fights, as if their respective achievements were anything like comparable. It's all so cynical and disingenuous.

Try to make an article or a serious post in a sports mass media outlet, about how you don't like to watch wahmen's boxing because it's too mediocre of a spectacle for your taste. Talk about facts like the poor pool of talent, lack of skills even in the so called elite fighters, etc

The truth of the matter is that brawn will always succumb to brain, and women do not fall short of having "smarts." I'd rather follow a smart but physically weak female than a dumb but physically strong male, especially if said female were smarter than I.

In all honesty, most of these comments invoke scenes of nascent neanderthals, dragging deer across mud and dried leaves, with club over shoulder.

The standard really is garbage

It would actually be great if they had any power to knock each other out cold because the standard is so awful, it would lead to some brutal knockouts, but 99% of women boxers have no power.

Curious how some kinds of hyperbole bother us more than others I guess. I'd tend to take any kinda hype you hear in any kinda sport - but particularly combat sports - with a pinch of salt. People say **** to get people interested... those who know their shet know their shet and know the hype for what it is. What does it matter?

I had to be up for work early on Sat and again this morning, so that pic reminds me of the way I felt 8 rounds into Taylor/Persoon last night, struggling to keep my eyes open and praying for it to end quickly so I could watch the main event and get some kip!

Maybe I'm feeling the lack of sleep and being a little harsh in my comments here. I don't mean to disrespect the guts it takes for anyone, male or female, to get up into a ring and fight. But, like i said in a previous comment, I feel the way female fights are being being pushed to the fore and given top billing on cards full of high level male fights nowadays is disrespectful to the depth and long history of men's boxing.

World we live in mate, I got some sympathies and I certainly wouldn't try to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't like but as a matter of principle I personally believe the women's sport should be supported. Aside from anything else the only way it's gonna improve is by getting more acceptance and getting more women into it. And trying to exclude women altogether would do waaay more harm than good.

Whether it should be headlined alongside men's fights or just languish on undercards is a matter for the markets to decide I reckon - and this feeling-out process is what's going on at the moment - to coin (and simultaneously bastardise) an Americanism I guess if it makes money it makes sense, but I think we'd be ****** as a sport to ignore the role women play in modern life. As I mentioned a few posts above calls to ban or limit the sport are more likely to come from women, and more boys are likely to get into the sport if it's gained some degree of acceptance amongst mothers... I'm thinking the best way to get women to accept it is to get 'em involved. What do you reckon?
