There's generally a progression top fighter take. It goes something like fight local bums, then fight the top local guys, then fight some journeymen fighters nationally, then take on someone like you (young, undefeated, gunning for a title), then fight old ex champions and top contenders, then fight champions/for championship belts. Vargas is a journeyman, Ortiz still has many steps to go.

I think he’s strides ahead than what you think
I get it , there are levels , most likely needs rounds
But I still would pick him over most
Hey man , that’s just me

Ortiz has talent, but what happens when his powder gets wet.
Exactly my point. I thing Ortiz needs two more cab driver fights, then go after the upper levels.🥊

I agree with Vergil that Thurman is a great style match for him, and he's got more firepower. Porter will push him, but he's not that great of a puncher and Vergil is way too smart to lose close rounds to Porter. Vergil could very well out work and outslug DSG, but Danny is still crafty enough to drag him into a long and tough fight and good enough of a puncher to really hurt him if he gets loose with the defense.

I think Vergil is a pick 'em against pretty much any of the WW elite except TC. Yes, I'm including Spence, even before the crash.
Good points and nice post. I just think Ortiz needs two more fights. All the elites are way better than Vargas and may ruin zoryix career early. Two more fights please 🥊

Props to GBP they're promoting him and bringing him along perfectly. No need to try and rush him in with a Crawford or Spence Jr or any of those Top 3-4 guys right now but 2021 give him the green light to try and hunt them all down 1 by 1
That's where I was going! I think Ortiz vs. Hooker would be great! Hopefully Texas can get a grip on the virus soon, and they can have fans in attendance by December!

Beating average gatekeeper in S. Vargas makes you believe Ortiz jr. can beat top guys? Really?

Ortiz should fight someone like Josesito Lopez, someone who is not afraid to trade hard shots, because he seems a little careless in the ring. He is avare his opposition is not on his level and not very dangerous.

Garcia should drop off the list. He can gain more from sparing him being they have the same trainer. Just for kicks he should call out crawford and spence. Then watch those two run, hide and cower behind all the valuable excuse lessons they learned from their bobfather. Ortiz skill might be coming along even if not yet there nobody wants a piece of that.

I think Vergil is on their level right now because I've seen him fight several times now and I've seen the WW elite fight plenty. Vergil didn't squeak by or at all struggle with Vargas. He beat that ass from pillar to post for seven full rounds. Vergil doesn't need to climb every rung of the ladder to be ready. He's 22 yrs old, a full grown man at the peak of his physical prime. He's going to develop better technique and craft for sure, but he will never be more of a physical beast than right now. As he said, he's confident and ready to take the risks necessary to become great. His physicality, skills and ring IQ are enough for him to compete well with any of the WW elite NEXT MONTH except for TC, IMO. He would get some respect for fighting the likes of Josesito Lopez or the Collazos of the division, but what for? He's already got plenty of respect. The time is right to become a star and go after the big fish and the big pay days. This next year is too important for him to be screwing around. He's no longer a prospect; he's a top shelf contender.

I would also tell him to consider Mo' Hooker! Both Texas natives, and both on DAZN! Should be easy to make! Ortiz is WBO #2, and Hooker is WBO #4! Another candidate, which is even easier to make, is Rashidi Ellis! Ellis is 22-0, also signed to Golden Boy, and needs some shine! WBA actually has Ellis ranked #9, and Thurman #11.
No chance that Thurman is next.
The other two suggestions are excellent and makeable fights, although not sure how keen those guys would be to take that work?!

They both would be very happy, because both need a big fight! I think it would be good for GBP to make Ortiz vs. Ellis, and I think it would be good for DAZN and the WBO to make Ortiz vs. Hooker!

I think that the only thing that Robert Garcia would have wanted wast to invest more on the body, besides that, it was a near flawless performance against a tested veteran.
