What people don't realize is that during his prime, other than the Caracas Caper he had one clear defeat and that was early early in his career. Otheriwse he beat Ali, lost the rematch( in my mind clearly although it was extremely competitive to the last second) in a best fight of the trilogy, and arguably could have won the 3rd. He Ko's the best up and coming contender in ONE round on national TV. And then he defends against Holmes in perhaps the best Heavyweight fight ever. He should have had the victory because he was champ. So here's a guy who beats Holmes and Ali and is never talked about. His losses were way past his prime and the Holmes fight was his last great performance because he left it all in the ring. He deserves better coverage.

Id be hard pressed to find more then 5 guys to potentially defeat Vitali in boxings history ,id find 5 for Wlad but realistically both are top 5 head to head fighters, Vitali isnt an all time great but that doesnt mean everyone gets by him boxing doesnt work like that the 6'7 giant is problems a big problem for anyone that signs to fight him .

Edit : Manny Steward who is argubly one of the best trainers of all time said Vitali was the second smartest fighter he ever met and been around training Wlad right behind Ali and its packaged in a 6'7 240 plus frame . Think about that one .

I thought Holmes just edged him tbh. The 15th round was unbelievable. Great fight, but yeah Norton pushed both Ali and Holmes right to their limit.

Similar to Wilfred Benitez he often gets overlooked because of the strength of his era.

amazing for being from the same family owning some of the world titles at the same time, think about it, its historic. Noones done it.

But individually, not in the top ten obviously, getting mashed out serially by middlers when prime in wlads case, and in vitalis case barely facing one good opponent all his career. Noone in the top ten or even twenty is remotely like this.

i did think longer than you about it. What I thought was that hes only the 2nd one to have a pHd so its perfectly arguable hes one of the smartest champions. But that doesnt make Stephen Hawking an all time great middleweight too.

H2h I think quite a few beat wlad. I think fury beats any version. But he reigned a long time so should be rewarded.

lets see how long it takes.

                      1 pages so far.

                      good luck.
