How come nobody rates winky wright as an atg?

Dude was amazing, had the best peekaboo defense/ cover up defense ever! He beat Tito, Mosley x2, Hopkins (actually not sure about that fight) and the Jermaine Taylor.

He really lost though to Fernando vargas- in a fight where nut huggers would claim he was robbed. Meaning close fight. It's kinda sickening to lose to Vargas, he never really beat anyone.

Anyways, what are your thoughts? I'm gonna go boxrec him

He ain’t ATG, just a very good fighter.

He did beat Jermain Taylor but Taylor was bailed out with the draw IMO.

He does have wins over Trinidad and Mosley but not enough to be ATG.

Lost to a green Fernando Vargas.

Wright is just a damn good fighter. Nothing wrong with that.

That's cool, dude deserves his accolades. I heard he used to walk away from anybody who drank or smoked.

He's a HoF. He gets his props as one. Thing is there are a seemingly countless amount of HoFers and most aren't even discussed. So simply mentioning Winky every blue moon as a HoFer is good enough. Boxing sites/channels/reports/etc tend to jump straight into endless conversations about ATGs. Besides the people who argue about ATG being a pointless status that fans created: ATG is held a step above HoF status. Only fighter that isn't an ATG that has consistently remained relevant is Mike Tyson. SRR/Joe Louis/Ali/Lennox usually get conversations about heavyweight supremacy. Srr/Srl/Floyd/Manny usually get conversations regarding Welter supremacy. It's just easier and funner for most to talk about ATGs. As opposed to picking out a single drop in the bucket of HoFers, which Winky no doubt is just another drop.

Winky Wright is clearly an all-time great and one of the best super welterweights of all time.

He was an undisputed champion. In fact, he’s the only one in the division since the start of the three belt era in the early 80s. He beat so many names, despite being avoided his whole career. He only lost to greats and was also the number two p4p fighter for a time.

Losing to Vargas when he did isn’t sickening. Vargas was a top 10 p4p boxer before the Trinidad fight and the odds in that fight were even very close. Vargas outclassed Ike Quartey, the same Quartey who many believe deserved a win or draw against De La Hoya in his only loss at that time. If the 20-0 Vargas that beat Wright was placed in today’s times, he would be the number one p4p boxer in the world and clearly have the strongest resume of anyone. Vargas-Wright was also incredibly close and I believe HBO scored it for Wright.

I thought he beat Taylor as well. Shame they didn't have a rematch.

Thought Wright had the potential to be great but one of things he did was sit around and wait for paydays. He did not want to stay busy. Hard to stay sharp if you sitting around for a year waiting.
