Right. I remember “The Winky Wright School of Business” comments.

I agree! Winky is on my top 10 favorite of all time. I couldn't believe he lost to Vargas. His style wasn't particularly flashy or exciting but in my opinion he was solid!

He was an undisputed champion. In fact, he’s the only one in the division since the start of the three belt era in the early 80s. He beat so many names, despite being avoided his whole career. He only lost to greats and was also the number two p4p fighter for a time.

Losing to Vargas when he did isn’t sickening. Vargas was a top 10 p4p boxer before the Trinidad fight and the odds in that fight were even very close. Vargas outclassed Ike Quartey, the same Quartey who many believe deserved a win or draw against De La Hoya in his only loss at that time. If the 20-0 Vargas that beat Wright was placed in today’s times, he would be the number one p4p boxer in the world and clearly have the strongest resume of anyone. Vargas-Wright was also incredibly close and I believe HBO scored it for Wright.
Super Welter has had some great fighters.

            Would you put Wright over

            Hearns, Mccallum, prime Trinidad?

Does winky beat a prime Trinidad at 154? The same Trinidad that ruined David Reid?

I had him beating Vargas like most did.

The worst part of that wasnt just the L on his record, it was him being shoved back onto ESPN level fights for 5 years until Mosley fought him.

I do think that he could have done a few things better career wise. He should have taken the fight with DLH, he should have done whatever it took to make that fight instead of being offended that the offer was too low, this is where him and Floyd were opposites. Floyd took all the concessions to make the DLH fight. Floyd is also a defensive fighter with low power like Winky, but trash talked his way to stardom, which IDK maybe some people could be glad Winky was just himself instead of fake, but he should have done everything to get DLH because he would have surely beat him IMO.

Hopkins fight was a letdown, he came in soft, I think he could have actually beat Hopkins, who had very low output in that point of his career and could be outworked (like Taylor did).

All in all though he had a good career. Hes a nice guy in person and he also saved his money and lives a decent life, doesnt have to work menial jobs and chit like that, owns some businesses.

At 154, I rank him ahead of all those guys.

True statement! Plus, he didn't have any good wins against guys his size.
Mosley was a smaller fighter, fighting at the tail-end of his career, and was no longer on steroids. That's like giving Spence props for beating Mikey. He had already bean beaten twice by Forrest, and most people felt DLH had beaten him in the rematch (outlanded by nearly 100 punches...)
Tito: well above his best weight, well past his prime, FOUR YEARS since getting whipped by Bernard. And this is a great win???
And he beat a 37-yr old Ike Quartey in Ike's last fight (going 3-4-1 in his last 8 bouts).
Winky is one of the weakest fighters to ever make the hall of fame. He was not special. He did nothing special. He got in because Rafael loved him and it was 'chic' to like the underappreciated fighter. He wasn't garbage...but he darn sure was not worthy of being on a HOF ballot..let alone ATG.

He was one of my favourite fighters and one of the best in his prime. He beat Harry Simon, Vargas and Taylor and didn’t get his just due. A fighter like him shows why you need a big promoter behind you and how it helps. He didn’t have that and therefore not only got the short end of the stick with decisions but also missed out on big fights and staying busy. He never should’ve had to move up to 170 to fight Hopkins. Despite the headbutt and dirty tactics Bernard did in that fight I had it very close. I think I had it a draw and he was fighting way above his ideal weight.

Not to mention Oscar De La Fishnets avoided him like the plague. If Wright came along in today’s day and age and had an Eddie Hearn/Floyd Mayweather/Al Haymon behind him he would’ve got a lot more respect. That and people not respecting his technical style are the reasons why he doesn’t get his deserved respect but real boxing fans know he was a beast. Great boxer. Very intelligent. Very hard to beat.

The Mosley fights were good as were the Trinidad and Quartey fights. He would’ve beat De La Hoya if they fought. Oscar knew and didn’t want none of that. Lol.
