Comments Thread For: Arum: We Must Convince Fighters To Take Lower Guarantees, More Upside For PPV Fights

Pay-per-view boxing events have reached prohibitive price points in the United States in part because promoters have had to guarantee boxers more money for such high-profile fights. Bob Arum believes that equation needs to change, especially if promoters and network partners are to experiment with lowering exorbitant prices for pay-per-view events in an American economy damaged badly by the COVID-19 pandemic. Arum discussed the adjustments he feels promoters and boxers must make to boxing's flawed pay-per-view model in the United States during the newest episode of Chris Mannix's Sports Illustrated boxing podcast.

These comments are not going to help him. Gotta give credit to Al Haymon. The guy has basically conquered the sport of boxing. All the fighters want to work with him because they know they will get paid the most. You can’t blame them.

If you’re a fighter who would you go with? That guy who has a reputation for making his fighters the most money, or the guy who is coming out saying fighters need to get paid less? Haymon is a genius and basically runs the fight game while promoters like Arum are losing momentum and power at a rapid pace.

I believe Bob tried this business model recently with the Wilder vs Fury 2 fight and was very successful. He may have lost money but at least both men agreed to accept a much lower guarantee in order to make more money from the upside or back end of the PPV sales; Which was at least $25 mil each.

Once again....and again....and again....boxers are MAKING TOO MUCH money verses the returns. If you are fighting a tomato can and you expect to be paid $7m for doing so when everyone involved is losing money because of it THAT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE. If you are fighting other chanpions, undefeated or streaking/exciting contenders, of you are engaging in actual legendary superfight level matchups then you deserve the big money. If to u are fighting showcase fights, then you do t deserve it. And to hell with all you incels talking about “they risk their lives” acting like boxers are serving their countries and communities like Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coasties, Police, Fire Brigade, nurses, doctors, emt’s etc. They are athletes and the market dictates the pay. Knock off the price off ppvs by half, do better promoting, come out with a boxing video game, get your boxers on more sitcom appearances, movies, game shows, etc, get them endorsements for fizzy pops, pre workout, make them the face of LA Fitness...etc etc. And that will garner more interest. Too many fighters these days are entitled to think they deserve 7 figures for fighting nobodies.
Free fights on network tv over ppvs and apps is the only way to grow the sport in the USA

I doubt changing the price will make much of a difference on ppv sales because $40 or $50 is still a lot to ask for when people can easily get a high quality stream for free
