Comments Thread For: Arum: Forget $80 For PPVs; Go Back To Charging $40 & We'll See Tremendous Increase In Buys

One important adjustment even Bob Arum admits boxing must make in a post-pandemic American economy is to lower pay-per-view prices. Arum suggested during the most recent episode of Chris Mannix's Sports Illustrated boxing podcast that it's time to drop suggested retail prices of pay-per-view events to $40. That would entice many more boxing fans to purchase pay-per-view fights and reduce piracy, which according to Arum, would offset the drastic drop in price from what has become an ever-increasing industry standard.

Whats the difference if they sell more?? If it's half the price that doesn't mean they're gonna sell twice as many . And even if they did , it wouldn't change **** except for the ppv sales no. All the money would be the same. I mean they will pick up some more casual purchases but they would make less money off ppv revenue this way selling more unless they more than double what they would normally sell. The price of ppv isn't what's killing the sport , its lack of mainstream exposure. And ppv isn't mainstream exposure in a niche sport . Put ppv cards on normal ESPN Bob and charge nothing extra thats whats gonna help

First fan-friendly idea Arum has had in a while.

Although I'm still trying to figure out if there is a hidden angle to this somewhere. Maybe he is going to ask fighters to take less pay?

Decreasing prices would be a great start, but my suggestion also would be that the main events start before 10:00PM EST. When you turn on an NBA Playoff game, you don't wait for "prelims!"

I don't know if that's true necessarily. There aren't THAT many boxing fans in America. Lets say there are 2 million fans willing to pay. You'll only get anything above that when it's a true crossover start like Mayweather.

If he charges $80 and gets 70% of fans, that's $112 million generated. If he can get 100% of those willing fans at $40, then that'll only generate $80 million. It's all about price elasticity.

Because of the current situation with the Coronavirus, it might be better to lower prices due to the high unemployment rate and the decreased gatherings of large groups.

Making a great fight card about the same price as the admission for taking your family to the movies makes all kinds of sense.

And a $40 price tag might mean the return of a once great social gathering: the fight party.

Back in the day, you didn't even have to worry about where to watch a ppv fight. It was only question of WHOSE party you were going to see it at.

No lie, I once actually showed up to a neighbor house I'd never spoken to previously (he was new to the block) with a few six packs. My beer got me the fight on a big screen, all I could eat carne asada right off the grill, harder liquor than I brought, a few telephone numbers for later AND a new friend.

Boxing needs to get back to that, back to one of the things that knit communities and people together.

Arum's just talking here. He knows he can't pay Crawford if the PPV is only $40.

Much to learn about consumerism you must. It’s proven, not theory, that you get more sales if you list at $9.99 vs $10. Yes, forget the idea of 1 cent that would complete or round to double digits.

That’s the reason why sales tags aren’t rounded. saving is a part of life in a capitalist world. $39.99 is more gravitating than $79.99.

Once again, my ***ish brother knows ALL the angles like the new Cohen, Lansky, and Rothman of old. Arum should rename top rank and call it Murder Inc.
