Haney vs Abdullaev was not for the WBC Lightweight title. It was for the interim title.

Regardless, I (and almost 100% of fans) don’t recognize ABC title contenders. They are usually unknown and outmatched. The top 10 ABC titles are a joke and any one who follows boxing knows this. When I say top 10 contenders, I mean The Ring top 10, TBRB top 10, ESPN top 10.

WBC probably got thousands of complaints from fans over it. That’s why he’s backtracking. He can’t just hand Haney the title no matter what amount of money Hearn may have hypothetically offered him. He will then have to do the same for literally every fighter in the same position in the future. And what happens when promoters aren’t willing to bribe the WBC like Hearn possibly did?

"Awaiting Campbell in a forthcoming vacant title fight will be the next highest-rated available challenger. At number two is Russia’s Zaur Abdullaev, followed by Las Vegas-based unbeaten lightweight Devin Haney, who is reportedly deep in talks with Matchroom and DAZN for a multi-fight deal."

Haney vs Abdullaev was originally a final eliminator to determine Lomachenko's mandatory challenger. It wasn't upgraded to an interim title fight until Suleiman had talks with Top Rank and Lomachenko...after it became obvious that they weren't planning to face the winner any time soon.

The WBC announced Wednesday that it has upgraded the fight between Devin Haney and Zaur Abdullaev on Sept. 13 (DAZN) at New York's Madison Square Garden from a lightweight title eliminator to a vacant interim title bout. “The WBC received a request to accept this fight to be contested for the WBC interim championship and consistent with a conversation with Top Rank and our proud champion Vasiliy Lomachenko, the WBC board of governors has approved the interim championship in this division,” the WBC said in a statement.” The Haney-Abdullaev winner likely would not have gotten the next shot at Lomachenko, who won the vacant WBC title by decision over Luke Campbell on Saturday to add to his two other belts and is likely headed to an undisputed title fight with the winner of the December fight between titlist Richard Commey and Teofimo Lopez Jr.
