Could HW Roy Jones have beat a washed up Tyson in 2004?

I think he should have stayed at HW, rematched with James Toney, and then go for Tyson.

I think Tyson was slow and hittable enough that Roy could have stayed out of range and boxed his a$$ off.

Even though Tyson was finished that would have been a huge fight and a great win and Jones would be considered on same level.as Cassius Clay and Ray Robinson

It’s hard to say because of what happened after Jones beat John Ruiz. He won a decision over Tarver many thought he lost and then he lost three times in a row.

True, but I do believe his excuse was legit, moving from HW back to 175, especially at 34, took a lot out of him

I can believe it, I’m just not sure how much he had before the weight drop. John Ruiz was not a good indicator of what he would face in the heavyweight division.

It’s probably a 50-50 fight and I have no clue what would have happened.

All Ruiz was good for was lulling people to sleep with a double jab and clinch. When they were expecting a jab and clinch for the 100th time in a row, he’d throw a right hand. That’s all he had. Not a real fighter and easy as hell to outbox if you could use your feet a little.

Tyson, on the other hand, was a real fighter and knew how to chase people down, old or not. Even taking his shots in the arms would have been a major turnoff for Roy.

Not saying he would have won or lost. Just that Roy didn’t want the fight.

I agree. Big George said " don't take anything away from Roy's win over Ruiz" because he legitimately earned it. What are the chances of a fighter going down in weight class to become victorious, the first one that comes to mind is Byrd, couldn't keep up with the speed being used to fighting slower big guys. Usually fighters are better as they move up weight classes.those losses to tarver stung for a bit. Pretty much just a faded memory now. But yeah, those 2 fights indeed would put him in very elite status, if he stayed at hw instead of cutting down to lt. Heavy.

I think the real question would be if Roy hit hard enough to get Tyson's respect. Tyson was shot but I could see him catching up to Roy. Remember Roy legs had started going before the move to heavyweight and he had that very bad habit of backing up to the ropes with hands held high. I think Mike takes advantage of that.

Didn't Danny Williams beat Tyson then?

So yeah. I think he would have

Based on what you said, he would have lost to Toney before even getting to Tyson lol
