Margarito didn't slow down because of age, it was more so him not being able to use illegal wraps anymore. Once he got caught, his record was 3-3, his 3 wins were underwhelming performances vs C level fighters and in his 3 losses, he barely won a single round. Without illegal wraps he was nothing more than a basic plodder with a great ability to absorb punishment.

Cheatto's eye damage against Pac caused the demise of his career. He just can't blame his team for that fiasco.
Adios, antonio cheatto.

Tough guy but one of the most overrated fighters of his generation. I think people forget how retarded, annoying and delusional his fans were on this site until he got caught trying to cheat. I can't say he cheated in other fights but let's look at this:
Before Mosley, Marg was destroying guys, knocking them out, busting up faces and even nearly ripped a guy's ear off. He gets caught with plaster. Goes 1-3 in four fights then retires. In the 3 fights that he lost, he took a horrible beating and barely won a round in any of them. I mean these fights weren't even close. He was thoroughly dominated.
Marg was really a jr middleweight/middleweight who starved himself to have a huge size advantage against his opponents. He relied on his opponents wilting in the second half of the fight and when that didn't happen, he couldn't do shit. Slower than molasses, not much skill. Just a great chin and amazing stamina. That's about it.

I have respect for Margarito. I think the wrap scandal was a bit blown out of proportion.
His stamina and punch resistance were things of legend.
Maybe because I first started to seriously follow boxing around the time of the Cotto fight (first fight), and remembering him being such a sizable underdog heading in, and him winning with the grit and determination I didn't know existed in a sport made me a fan..
Remember the Mosley fight like yesterday as well. I missed it live but caught it on replay and was stunned when he lost.
Hope he enjoys the spoils of his career well as he ages

Or maybe by that time he was starting to slow down. High-output guys who absorb lots of punishment don't have long careers and have a short prime.
Or maybe even before the controversy he wasn't that great. His notable wins before were Cotto and Cintron. Cintron was just an athlete with a good punch. Maybe a name I'm forgetting. OH clottey too in a very close fight where Clottey is said to have messed an arm up in the early stages.
Lost a close but clear decision to Williams who was very overrated.
He never was a world class fighter just a badass with a great O2 capacity.
He basically had one night where his will finally trumped skill with a true world class boxer in the absolute prime of their career.
Long live Margarito!
