Comments Thread For: Derrick Jefferson Hospitalized, Under Observation for COVID-19

Once an integral part of HBO's Boxing After Dark series, Derrick Jefferson is now in a fight of a different kind. The former heavyweight contender was diagnosed with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and is currently in a medically induced coma while under observation at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Royal Oak (Michigan) Beaumont Hospital. Jefferson, 52, was admitted on Sunday after showing symptoms of the disease.

    Derrick Jefferson: I love you.

What Larry Merchant once said must be extended to all of us for him now.

Lots of missing information about his general health. Not at all convinced that he was in good health despite his kidney transplant. You don’t get put into a coma for a fcking cold (covid-19). He’s in the hospital for something else.

Well if he suffers from health issues that were manageable the covid19 can def make them unmanageable and put you in the hospital I would assume it's a bit of both if he tested positive for the virus

Old people and people with existing health issues seem to be the ones who are perishing from this **** . Healthy people seem to doing alright and being released within a few weeks if hospitalized at all

The issue is is that with how contagious this virus is that everyone gets sick at the same time and end up overwhelming the medical system.

That's why the death toll's been so high in Italy & Spain.

People who'd normally survive after a few weeks in the hospital are not being able to be hospitalized or have ventilators available to them because there's hundreds of others in the same spot.

Thats exactly it, u run out of ventilators and people start dying, if this virus takes hold in places with very poor health care systems older people are in big trouble

My thoughts and prayers with D-Train. I remember watching his fights with my buddies back when I lived in Philadelphia. His war with Maurice Harris was brutal and I was bummed when he turned certain victory into defeat against David Izon. Derrick always brought it and went for the KO.

I'm sure he's a warrior in and outside the ring, keep fighting Champ!

It seems like blood pressure issues are a real risk for Covid 19.The medication coverts receptors in the lungs to something called ACE 2.These are apparently something the virus uses to further infiltrate. Hope he gets better soon.

I'll never forget that fight...he was looking for the KO with every punch he threw. I remember thinking "how's he going to get off the stool and go out there?" and he'd go back out after the KO round after round until he couldn't throw anymore.

I agree that he almost certainly has other health issues but Covid-19 is a lot more lethal than just a cold.
