How come fighters don't take an 8 count instead of letting ref stop the fight?

Two examples of this are Jermaine Taylor vs Carl Froch and De la Hoya verse Mayorga. Both of them were getting hit with a flurry of punches and not throwing back and causing the ref to step in and stop the fight.

Especially in Jermaine Taylor's case. He was getting tee'd off on with less than a minute to go. Why not just get on your knee and take an 8 count and recover some energy instead of not throwing back and forcing the ref to step in?

If you take a knee in either circumstance then you’ve given up. 95% if the time, the ref stops it right there. Your best bet is to weather the storm with defense or cracking the opponent with a bomb to show you’re okay.

Pride an ego. It's even harder for a fighter to do if they're undefeated and have never been knocked down. Couldn't imagine Manny Pacquiao taking a knee on his own. Too much heart. Too much dog.

i was talking to a couple of my homeboys who box, during the Fury/Wilder fight. A lot of of people were screaming for the fight to be stopped in the 6th as Wilder was taking a lot of punishment and looked like he had given up. I asked my boys what would be their preference, to get ktfo or have the ref stop it. Their answers were split. One said he'd rather go out on his shield knowing he lost to the better man. The other said he'd rather his corner or ref stop it so as not to take too much punishment so that they'd be ok in the long run.

Because many boxing fans are idiots with long memories. Cotto, for instance, was being bludgeoned senseless with plastered fists and there are still idiots critcizing him for doing the very sensible thing you suggest.

No one trains to take a knee and give away points to their opponent. Plus I think any fighter would start looking at their trainer funny if the trainer started talking about 'if your hurt bad, take a knee.' like does he not trust me? Does he think the other fighter is better? I dunno, that's a question you should ask Bradley, what was going through his mind when he took a knee against Ruslan in the 12th.

I'm not sure if that's fully relevant to what the TS is talking about here. I think this about taking a knee to avoid the fight being stopped.... Cotto wanted the fight to get stopped.

Not the way I remember it...The first time Cotto took a knee he gathered himself and tried to rally after taking an 8 count. the second time his corner stepped into the ring and stopped it.
