Comments Thread For: Wilder's Head Trainer: I Don't Think Breland Should've Thrown Towel

LAS VEGAS Deontay Wilder wasn't the only one who didn't want his assistant trainer to throw in the towel Saturday night. Jay Deas, Wilder's head trainer and co-manager, revealed during the post-fight press conference that he instructed assistant trainer Mark Breland not to throw in the towel when Breland brought up that possibility in their corner during the seventh round. By the time the press conference began at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Deas hadn't had the opportunity to speak to Breland, a former WBA welterweight champion, about why he threw that white towel into the ring anyway.

Deontay being a “go out on his shield” type of guy is all the more reason Breland should have thrown the towel in. His job is to protect the fighter from himself.

Although the exact moment where the towel was thrown may not have been the best, there were several opportunities before that where it would have been appropriate. I was rooting for Deontay but this was a good stoppage. He took a pretty good beating last night. Hats off to Fury, who looks like the best in the division, and was able to pull off what no one else could. He took away wilders only weapon and made him very ordinary. Much easier said than done when his greatest weapon is something that can put you in the hospital at any moment. That was great game planning, and amazing bravery to pull that off and it was an honor to watch it. Hope to see the best keep fighting the best.

"Mark threw the towel,” Deas explained. “I didn’t think he should’ve. Deontay’s the kind of guy that’s the go-out-on-his-shield kinda guy."

And that is why this chump should never work in boxing again.
I get he is his co-manager and so is interested in the $$$ but he also has a care of duty to his employees. Wilder had a busted jaw pouring blood from there, a nasty cut in his ear pouring blood from there. He had no energy, could barely stand and held on soon as Fury got close. His defence was shot and was taking punches to the head with ease.

This piece of **** would rather it went a few more rounds so Fury eventually tagged him with further hits and he no longer would have got up. That is how fighters end up in hospitals for the rest of their lives.

It is a sport, not a life or death situation. If Wilder doesn't fully recover then this guy is to blame for not having the balls or knowledge to know when a fighter needs help.

The assistant trainer done Wilder a good deed there.

He was in the corner taking a beating, If it had been allowed to continue, Wilder was getting stopped.

At least now Wilder can say he didn't quit, wasn't stopped and wanted to continue fighting...... good excuse for a rematch.

Wilder was being beaten to a pulp.if the corner was going to stop the fight they should’ve not allowed him to continue after the 5th, blaming his knee. Never should’ve let him sustain that type of beating

It was a valid stoppage. He was getting his ass kicked every round and offered hardly any resistance. If they let it go, he'd have been stopped legitimately within the next round or 2.

I think Deas is part of the problem to be honest, no wonder Wilder is so terrible...
