Boxers Who Died Young

Yes, they were all in my original post. I’ve been updating the list as people mention specific names. Several members have provided links to different sites that are far more inclusive than the list I offer. I’m trying to pay tribute and stoke discussion. It’s not my intention to be definitive. Sadly, hundreds of boxers have died in the ring, and many more have died young. If anyone is interested in looking deeper, the links are there for further research.
Choi, as I pointed out in my list, is a rare case of a champion dying as a result of punches he absorbed in a fight. Thank you for adding more details to his story.Comment

And here’s an interesting, fairly recent CNN article about boxing deaths: https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/17/sport...rnd/index.html. It reports that, “Between 1890 and 2011, it's estimated that 1,604 boxers died as a direct result of injuries sustained in the ring... That is an average of 13 deaths a year.” Somewhere in the world, a boxer will die this month due to injuries suffered in the ring.
None of this takes into account all the non-lethal, but nonetheless terrible, injuries fighters have sustained over time from boxing. Men such as Magomed Abdusalamov and Prichard Colón have suffered life-ruining injuries from their boxing matches.Comment

From Wikipedia: “Galíndez was forced to retire because of two operations to repair his detached retinas, and then he tried to pursue his other dream of becoming a stock-car race pilot. On 25 October of that year, he participated in what would be his first and last Turismo Carretera race. After going to the pit for repairs, Galíndez was struck by a car that lost control and killed instantly while in the waiting area.”Comment

To my knowledge, there has only been one female death in boxing to date. Becky Zerlentes (34) died as a result of being knocked out in an amateur boxing match in 2005. Becky was highly accomplished. She was a college professor of geography and economics, and also taught martial arts.
MMA has recently seen its first female casualty. Saeideh Aletaha (26) was killed as a result of injuries sustained in a K1 match in November of 2019.Comment

So many of these men have met terrible and untimely deaths. Agapito’s killer only got fifteen years in prison.Comment
