Bhop turned pro at 28!!! Wilder wasn’t a novice. He was an Olympian who got a bronze, so he must have been good enough to qualify for the Olympics. And when he turned pro he was protected for 95% of his career, built along at a slow pace by his shrewd managers, once everyone left they then unleashed him when they knew he was ready and when the new comers were too green for him, still he was overtaken by people like Fury and Joshua. So no he didn’t expose anything.

I don't know if it exposes boxing or proves it to be the best sport.

On one hand, it's a bit embarrassing that he can pick it up late and still rise to the top. It doesn't say much for the required technique to be mastered. Compare that to other sports like soccer - if your technique is crap at 12 you pretty much won't catch up.

But then again, it's the most natural sport. Man was made to fight. Survival of the fittest. Why shouldn't great genetics, dedication to fitness, and generally being a double hard bastard have its reward? That's why boxing is so great.

Power has always been the great equalizer in boxing. And its always been the most exploitable at HW. Wilder didn't expose anything most boxing cats didn't know already.

The bigger you are the more likely it is that power can trump skill. And the margain of error on skill is larger at HW than any other division.

Randomly you see the same thing in all fighting sports. I see it in MMA all the time. Hell you can even see it in sumo which while not technically a combat sport there is a dynamic of aggression & balancing skill against strength where superior strength can beat better skill.

And randomly part 2 this reality is what makes BJJ among the best combat sports to learn cuz skill can overcome power/strength more often in that game.

Hes 6'7 and athletic, with a solid jab and GOAT one shot power in his right hand. Plus hes fighting at HW where the talent pool and average level of skills tend to be relatively weak.

Yeah that last bit... I think that's the point.

Does it show up boxing at the heavyweight class?

Is every boxer who we consider to be great, really great? Or are they only the best because others didn't bother boxing?
