If I mention Tyson in casual conversation, everyone knows who you are talking about.

If I mention Mayweather, they don't have a clue and I have to explain, and they lose interest.

In the list of famous sports stars Mayweather doesn't even make the top 1000.

Wouldn't even make it as the top 50 known boxers

Many people outside of US do not know who Mayweather is.

Mike Tyson was a worldwide phenomenon. Even people who know virtually nothing about boxing know who Tyson is. Floyd is very popular but not on the same level as fighters like Tyson or Ali.

Mayweather built PPV sales on a platform that Tyson created. He's the beneficiary. For example, whoever is Apple's owner now might make more money than Steve Jobs and live longer. They will never surpass Jobs in name recognition.
