The word 'exposed' is overused my friend.
Smith did get a gift.
However he was up against a squat, super motivated southpaw who produced the performance of his life and dragged Smith into an inside fight and was unlucky not to get the nod.
Ironically, I believe that Smith would be a stylistic nightmare for Benavidez who fights at length with wider punches.
It would be a great fight and be a great exposition for the 168 division

I'd be surprised if Canelo suddenly fought the way Ryder does and have the stamina to pull that off. We see how it isn't the most difficult thing to get past Smith's jab, but Canelo has an even shorter reach than Ryder. He'd be giving up 8 1/2 inches. Not to mention Canelo is orthodox, which the southpaw stance I think caused Smith more problems than he was anticipating. Like I said, I'd still favor Canelo, but fighting anything like Ryder isn't the most feasible outcome.

He'll get inside eventually, no doubt. Smith would be wise to touch the body too, which he can do very well when he decides to. If Smith had a more educated jab, he'd be so much more difficult. Would be a cracking fight though.
